Miners use big innings to win series at Truman

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Missouri S&T bounced back from a loss to Truman State on Saturday with a victory to take the final regular season series in Great Lakes Valley Conference play from the Bulldogs Sunday afternoon, using two big innings to come away with a 13-3 win.

The Miners (21-19, 17-15 GLVC), who took three of the four games from Truman (7-33, 7-25 GLVC) in the weekend series, had big innings after each of the two frames in which the Bulldogs scored as they tallied four runs in the third and six in the ninth.

Truman got on the scoreboard in the second on Kolin Demel's RBI double, but the Miners answered back in the third.  With one out, Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Michael Ward (Hazelwood, MO/Hazelwood West) belted a home run for the third straight day and extended his S&T single season record to 12 for the year to put the Miners in front.

Following the Ward home run, Keegan Baxmeyer (Waterloo, IL/Freeburg) doubled and Andrew Branson (St. James, MO/St. James) walked before Tate Morrell (Lloydminster, AB/) dropped in a hit to bring home Baxmeyer.  Branson ended up at third and scored moments later on a sacrifice fly by Brady Voss (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty).  S&T added to its lead in the fourth when it loaded the bases with one out and with two out, Branson delivered a two-run single to make it 6-1.

Branson would drive in his third run of the contest in the sixth with a hit that scored Baxmeyer.

Truman plated two runs in the eighth to cut into the lead, but the Miners again answered in the ninth by scoring six times to give themselves plenty of breathing room.

The inning started with a walk to Voss and after he stole second and took third on a wild pitch, he scored on a hit by Dakota Sill (Lansing, KS/Lansing).  Sill stole second and came home after Will Hayes (Terre Haute, IN/South Vigo) reached on an infield single; a throwing error on the play allowed the run to score.  After Hayes reached third on a wild pitch, he would score when Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) bounced out to the pitcher.

S&T's uprising continued with two outs, as Ward drew a walk and scored on a double by Baxmeyer, then after Branson walked and Morrell was hit by a pitch, Voss – batting for the second time in the inning – doubled into the gap in left center to bring home the final two runs of the inning.

Hayes and Branson had three hits apiece to pace the Miners, who outhit the Bulldogs 13-6.  The Miners had five extra base hits among their 13 hits and also stole five bases in the game.

Kyle Fowler (Foristell, MO/St. Dominic) got his first start of the season on the hill for the Miners and allowed just one run and one hit in his four innings of work to pick up the win.  S&T used three pitchers after Fowler, who combined to allow five hits and record three strikeouts over the final five innings.

The Miners will open play in the GLVC Tournament in St. Charles, Mo., on Thursday by taking on Lindenwood – the top seed from the GLVC's Blue Division – at 4 p.m.
