ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball season came to a close Friday as Quincy eliminated the Miners from the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament by the score of 8-0 at Lindenwood University.
As was the case in S&T's first round contest on Thursday, it was a big inning early in the game that put it into a hole it couldn't climb out of as its season ended with a 21-21 record.
Following three scoreless innings, the Hawks broke on top in the fourth on a two-run single by Eric Tipton and a two-run homer to the opposite field by Justin Eads.
The Miners had a good scoring opportunity in the fifth when
Brady Voss (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) reached on an error with one out and Brady WIldschuetz followed with a single, but Quincy starter Spencer Walker escaped the jam with a pair of groundouts. In the sixth,
Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) reached on an error to start the inning, but Walker again shut down S&T with a pop fly and two ground balls.
Quincy tacked on a run in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Jacob Kalusniak and added three more in the eighth.
The Miners were held to three hits in the game – a second inning single by
Andrew Branson (St. James, MO/St. James), Wildschuetz's hit in the fifth and an eighth inning single by
Will Hayes (Terre Haute, IN/South Vigo) – by a trio of Quincy hurlers. Walker held the Miners to two hits in seven innings of work.
S&T starter
Rian Markes (Columbia, MO/Father Tolton), one of five pitchers employed by the Miners in the game, was charged with the loss.
