LIBERTY, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball team scored five times in the first inning Monday afternoon and continued the offensive onslaught throughout the afternoon as it set a single game school record for runs in a 30-17 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over William Jewell.
Playing in breezy conditions, the Miners had innings in which they scored eight, six, five and four runs against 10 Cardinal pitchers to break the record of 27 that was set in a 1995 game against Webster and win a series over Jewell in Liberty for the first time in conference play. The 47 runs scored between the teams was the most ever scored by two squads combined in a GLVC contest and the Miners became the eighth team in conference history to score at least 30 runs in a game.
More importantly, the Miners moved back to the .500 mark both overall (16-16) and in GLVC play (12-12) as they held onto its hold of third place in the GLVC Green Division with eight games remaining on their conference slate.

S&T single game records tied on Monday:
At bats – 7, Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North)
Home runs – 2, Michael Ward (Hazelwood, MO/Hazelwood West) |
The Miners got the scoring started on
Doug Wood's (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) two-run single that began the five-run first inning. S&T would load the bases later in the inning and
Braden Mahurin (Dixon, MO/Dixon) was hit by a pitch to force home a run, then
Brady Voss (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) singled home two more runs.
William Jewell (11-21, 9-19 GLVC) scored twice in the bottom half of the inning, but the Miners put three more runs on the board in the second – all coming on RBI doubles off the bats of
Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette),
Andrew Branson (St. James, MO/St. James) and
Tate Morrell (Lloydminster, AB/). However, the Cardinals cut the lead to 8-6 in their half of the second, three of the runs scoring on a home run by Anthony Hansen.
But the Miners answered back with a four-run third, as
Dakota Sill (Lansing, KS/Lansing) and
Will Hayes (Terre Haute, IN/South Vigo) had run-scoring hits, Wood drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Weiner knocked in a run with an opposite field single. Sill and Weiner also drove in runs in the fourth with hits before the Cardinals scored twice in the fourth and again in the fifth to cut the S&T lead to 14-9.
The Miners got a two-run homer from
Michael Ward (Hazelwood, MO/Hazelwood West) to extend their lead, but the Cardinals trimmed the margin to 16-13 with a four-run sixth inning before the Miners exploded in the seventh with eight runs.
The inning began with a hit by Wood, then Morrell doubled with one out to bring Wood home.
Landon Bell (Seymour, MO/Seymour) came up as a pinch-hitter and singled up the middle to score Morrell, which was followed by an infield single by Voss and a walk to Sill – one of a school record 18 walks drawn by Miner hitters Monday.
Hayes reached on an error after the walk to Sill and Ward singled home two runs after that, before the Miners got another RBI single by Wood and bases loaded walks to Branson and Morrell to complete their scoring in the seventh.
William Jewell scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to extend the game, but the Miners put the contest out of reach by plating six runs in the eighth that included Ward's second two-run homer of the game and the first collegiate home run by Branson, as he belted a three-run shot.
Brady Wildschuetz (Foristell, MO/Francis Howell) drove in the final run later in the inning.
The Miners recorded their second-highest total of hits in a game in school history as they outhit the Cardinals 24-15. Ward had four hits, drove in six runs and reached base seven times in the game, while Wood had four hits as well and knocked in four runs. S&T also got three hits from Sill – who went 10-of-16 in the four-game series – Weiner and Morrell, while Branson had five runs batted in.
Matt Kaiser, one of five pitchers used by S&T in the contest, was credited with the win after allowing one run and two hits in his two innings on the hill.
The Miners return to the field Friday when they face Southwest Baptist in the first game of a four-game series at the S&T Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
