ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T picked up its first series win in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Monday afternoon as it wrapped up its series with Drury by routing the Panthers 12-2 at the S&T Ballpark to take three of the four games in the set.
As was the case in their two previous wins in the series, the Miners (11-13, 7-9 GLVC) took the lead in the first inning when
Keegan Baxmeyer (Waterloo, IL/Freeburg) tripled over the head of the centerfielder to bring home
Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) and
Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette). The Miners added to their lead in the second when
Brady Voss (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and came in to score on a hit by
Braden Mahurin (Dixon, MO/Dixon).
S&T continued to increase its advantage in the third as
Michael Ward (Hazelwood, MO/Hazelwood West) tripled to open the frame and later scored on
Andrew Branson's (St. James, MO/St. James) sacrifice fly, then the Miners plated two more runs as Voss singled in Weiner and later scored on a double steal attempt as he took home when Mahurin broke for second and drew a throw.
The Miners made it 8-0 in in the fifth as Weiner opened the inning by hitting the first home run of his Miner career and Mahurin drove in his second run of the game with a hit that scored Voss.
Drury (9-14, 9-11 GLVC) got on the scoreboard in the sixth on a two-run double by Nikko Calabro, but S&T scored three in the bottom of the sixth without the benefit of a hit and ended the game in the seventh when Voss led off with a triple and came home on a one-out single by
Will Hayes (Terre Haute, IN/South Vigo).
The Miners got solid pitching from a trio of hurlers on Monday, beginning with winning pitcher
Dylan Mollett (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) throwing three hitless innings.
Mick Von Feldt (St. Charles, IA/Interstate 35) threw 2 1/3 innings before turning it over to
David Kephart (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest) in the sixth and he proceeded to retire all five hitters he faced.
Missouri S&T outhit Drury 13-3 in the contest, with Voss getting three hits and Weiner, Mahurin and
Dakota Sill (Lansing, KS/Lansing) getting two apiece. Baxmeyer drove in three in the game and finished the series against the Panthers with eight runs driven in.
The Miners will head to the road for their next two GLVC series, beginning with a four-game set against Rockhurst in Kansas City that begins Friday.
