LIBERTY, MO-The Miners picked up their second win of the season over William Jewell tonight collecting the 3-0 sweep over the Cardinals to move to 10-5 on the year.
WJC jumped out to a 4-1 lead over the Miners to start set one, but a 10-1 run quickly gave S&T an 11-5 lead. They would extend their lead out to as much as 20-10 after kills from
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State),
Shelby Ply (Rolla, Mo./Rolla),
Jordan Burton (Olathe, Kansas/Olathe South Senior High), and a block from
Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy).
S&T would end the set on a 4-1 run and took the 25-12 set one win after a kill from O'Boyle.
The Cardinals would make it tough for the Miners in the second set; after S&T pulled away from Jewell with a 12-5 lead, the Cardinals would go on an 8-1 run to tie the game at 13-13. S&T was able to pull away late in the set, but WJC fended off three Miner set points before a Cardinal error gave S&T the 25-22 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
It was all Missouri S&T in the final set. The Miners snatched a quick 8-1 lead and never looked back. S&T would get the 25-17 set three win off a block from
Shelby Ply (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) and
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) and take the 3-0 match win.
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) led all hitter with 12 kills and added in 11 digs while
Jordan Burton (Olathe, Kansas/Olathe South Senior High) chipped in 11 kills and five service aces.
Hannah Merjil (Bakersfield, CA/Garces Memorial) dished out a game-high 31 assists while also adding in two service aces and six digs.
Along with Gannaway's 11 digs,
Meiko Pearson (Overland Park, Kansas/Blue Valley Northwest) picked up 13 while
Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) also added in 11.
