WESTFIELD, Ind. – Indianapolis used a late outburst Sunday afternoon to gain a split of the four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference weekend series against Missouri S&T's baseball team, breaking a tie in the seventh inning and going on to a 7-4 win to close the set.
The Greyhounds (3-7, 2-2 GLVC) scored twice in the seventh and another run in the ninth to win for the second straight time in the series after the Miners (6-6, 2-2 GLVC) had taken the first two contests of the weekend.
UIndy scored in the top half of the first – ending a six-game streak in which the Miners had scored first – when Trey Smith crossed the plate when Hunter Waning hit into a fielder's choice, but S&T answered with three in the bottom half of the inning.
Following back-to-back walks to
Will Hayes (Terre Haute, IN/South Vigo) and
Michael Ward (Hazelwood, MO/Hazelwood West),
Keegan Baxmeyer (Waterloo, IL/Freeburg) doubled to the opposite field to bring home Hayes. Ward would score on a ground out by
Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North), then Baxmeyer scored the third run of the inning on a ground ball off the bat of
Tate Morrell (Lloydminster, AB/).
The Greyhounds took the lead in the third with three runs off S&T starter
Dylan Dunbar (West Plains, MO/West Plains), as the first five hitters reached base and the go-ahead run scoring on a sacrifice fly by Isaac Bair. S&T evened the score in the fourth when Wood led off with a hit, was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a two-out hit by
Dakota Sill (Lansing, KS/Lansing).
The contest remained tied into the seventh when the Greyhounds took the lead against the Miner bullpen.
Alex Vela led off the inning with a hit and Smith drew a walk, then they combined on a double steal to put both runners in scoring position. Brandon DeWitt followed by bunting a ball up the third base line that scored Vela and a wild throw on the play also brought in Smith.
The Miners got out of the inning without any further damage and got a two-out double from
Brady Wildschuetz (Foristell, MO/Francis Howell) in the bottom half of the frame, but he was stranded there and S&T did not get another baserunner for the rest of the contest.
UIndy got its seventh run in the ninth on a Bair sacrifice fly.
The Greyhounds outhit the Miners 13-5; Sill had two of S&T's five hits on the afternoon. Reliever
David Kephart (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest) was charged with the loss.
The Miners will be idle from play until March 26 when it opens a weekend series against Quincy at the S&T Ballpark.
