Miners Take Down Greyhounds and 23rd Ranked Hawks

INDIANAPOLIS, IND.- The Miners picked up two much needed wins this weekend taking the 3-2 game one win over Indianapolis and then taking down 23rd ranked Quincy in four sets to move to 8-4 for the season.

MISSOURI S&T: 3, INDIANAPOLIS: 2 (24-26, 25-10, 25-19, 22-25, 15-9)
The Miners and Greyhounds kept it close in the first set, neither team being able to get more than a couple of points ahead of the other.

Looking at a 23-21 deficit, S&T got a big kill from Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) to cut UIndy's lead to just one. The Miners would then fight off two set points with a kill from Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) and a UIndy error to tie the set at 24-24.
The Greyhounds would push for two points off kills from Hannah Huppenbauer to take the 26-24 set one win.

It was a much different story in set two; after the Greyhounds took a quick 3-1 lead, the Miners front line showed their strength with a 6-0 run that was capped with back-to-back service aces from Hannah Merjil (Bakersfield, CA/Garces Memorial) to take the 7-3 lead.

After both teams fought to take control of the set, S&T made a statement with five straight kills from Hannah Merjil (Bakersfield, CA/Garces Memorial), Jordan Burton (Olathe, Kansas/Olathe South Senior High), and Shelby Ply (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) to extend their lead out to 18-8. The Miners would end the set on a 7-2 run and took the 25-10 win off consecutive kills from Jordan Burton (Olathe, Kansas/Olathe South Senior High).

S&T had to climb out of a hole to start the third set. Down 11-7, the Miners would get three service aces from Hannah Merjil (Bakersfield, CA/Garces Memorial), two kills from Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State), and a double block from Gannaway and Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) to take the 14-11 lead.

That lead was enough for the Miners to keep the Greyhounds at bay and close out the set with kills from Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) and Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) to take the 25-19 set three win and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
UIndy forced a fifth set after taking the fourth by a final score of 25-22.

The Miners found themselves down 24-17 and would fight off five set points after a block from Shelby Ply (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) and Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy), kills from Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve), and a service ace from Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) and make it a 24-22 game. But, the Greyhounds would take the set four win after a kill from Taylor Jacquay.

Missouri S&T would edge past Indianapolis in the fifth set after the Miners closed out the set with five of the final six points going in favor of S&T.

Jordan Burton (Olathe, Kansas/Olathe South Senior High) led the way for the Miners with 18 kills and 10 digs while Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) and Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) also recorded double-doubles with a combined 27 kills and 21 digs.

Hannah Merjil (Bakersfield, CA/Garces Memorial) dished out a game-high 58 assists while Meiko Pearson (Overland Park, Kansas/Blue Valley Northwest) picked up 25 digs.

S&T's blockers had a big game, recording 12 blocks with Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) leading the way with six block assists and one solo block.

MISSOURI S&T: 3, #23 QUINCY: 1 (21-25, 25-17, 25-12, 25-22)
After the Hawks opened the match with a 25-21 set one win, the Miners took full control of the game.

In set two, S&T came from behind and took the 18-12 lead that was capped with back-to-back kills from Jordan Burton (Olathe, Kansas/Olathe South Senior High) and Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy). While the Hawks were able to cut into the Miners lead, four combined kills from Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) and Shelby Ply (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) would secure S&T the 25-17 set two win and tie the match at 1-1.

It was all S&T in the third set; the Miners held Quincy to just 12 points in the set and put down 15 kills to cruise to the 25-12 win and quickly take the 2-1 lead in the match.

The Miners momentum continued into the fourth set as they sailed out to a 10-4 lead after S&T's hitters had a field day with the Hawks defense. Quincy made a comeback and ended up tying the game at 12-12.

Missouri S&T regained their lead at 20-15 off a kill from Jordan Burton (Olathe, Kansas/Olathe South Senior High). They would push for four points and look at a 24-17 match point situation. But, Quincy would fight off five match points against the Miners to make it a 24-22 game.

Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) put the Hawks away with her match ending kill and gave the Miners their third win over a national ranked team.

Jordan Burton (Olathe, Kansas/Olathe South Senior High), Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State), Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve), and Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) all recorded double digit kills in the win for the Miners while Hannah Merjil (Bakersfield, CA/Garces Memorial) dished out a game best 46 assists.
