ROMEOVILLE, ILL.-The Miners struggled against the full court pressure brought on by Lewis' defense tonight. S&T was forced into multiple early turnovers that put them in a hole early. But, the Flyer's defense would hold steady and force the Miners to face the 93-71 loss.
Lewis jumped all over the Miners to open play; with 2:38 remaining in the first quarter, S&T was looking at a 12-point deficit after being forced into seven turnovers in the first seven minutes. The Miners would add in three made free-throws from
Ashley Harvey (Raytown, Mo./Raytown) and
Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) before the end of the quarter, but the Flyers offense was right there to match them and took a 27-14 lead into the second quarter.
S&T kept fighting to stay in the game into the second quarter; an 8-4 run, that was capped by a three-pointer from
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township), put the Miners down 31-22 with 7:07 left in the first half. But, Lewis would answer right back with a 13-0 run to push their lead out to 22.
The Miners would score eight of the last 10 points in the half to cut their deficit to 46-30 just before the half.
Lewis' offense exploded in the third quarter, taking as much as a 28-point lead. Harvey would hit a short jumper just before the buzzer to put the Miners down 71-46 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
While S&T's offense got a bit of a push in the fourth quarter, the damage Lewis had already made was too much to come back from and the Miners faced the 93-71 loss.
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) led the way for the Miners with 18 points while
Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) and
Eryn Puett (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) added in 11 points.
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) was the final S&T player to score in double figures as she recorded 10 points and a game high four steals.
Kristin Steins (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) led the way for S&T on the boards pulling down a game-best eight rebounds, three of those being offensive.
As a team, Missouri S&T (3-17, 3-17 GLVC) finished the game shooting 41.4% from the field and just over 42% from beyond the arc.
