Miners Downed by Panthers in Overtime in GLVC Semifinals

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Making their first appearance in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament semifinals since 2014, the Missouri S&T women's soccer team took to the field at Harrison Stadium Friday afternoon opposite second-seeded Drury. After 90 minutes yielded no score, overtime was needed to determine a winner and just three minutes into the extra period, the Panthers (14-4-1) converted a penalty kick in the 93rd minute to defeat the Miners (9-6-3) and advance to the finals against Southern Indiana 1-0.

Drury put First Team All-GLVC goalie Kristin Steins (Ballwin, MO/Parkway South) to work early with a shot that was saved in the third minute of action as the Panthers managed three looks on goal in the first 15 minutes of the game. Melanie Kulig (Belleville, IL/Belleville West) had S&T first chance in the 16th minute but missed off target left.

Steins made another save in the 18th minute before Ally Hasken (Freeport, IL/Freeport) had her first look of the day but she too missed off target. The Panthers held the advantage in shots throughout the first 45 minutes, managing eight total in the first 45. S&T had a pair of good looks in the closing moments of the opening period from Damita Mendoza (San Antonio, TX/Smithson Valley) and Sydney Gratz (Geneva, IL/Geneva), but both shots were saved by Second Team All-GLVC goalie Kaitlyn Knetzke as the first period went with no change in score.

Offense was hard to come by in the second half as the teams combined for just three shot attempts in the opening 20 minutes, two of which came from Hasken but were both saved by the Drury keeper. Danielle Hopkins (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) had a chance at the first goal of the game for S&T in the 73rd minute but was denied y the keeper. The Panther best chance in the second half to score came moments later in the 74th minute but Steins was there to make the save and keep things scoreless. Neither side had much success in creating opportunities as 90 minutes came and went with no score.

The extra period saw just one opportunity and it ended up being the game-winner. Allison Cole (Mansfield, TX/Mansfield) was whistled for a foul in the box and Drury was awarded a penalty kick. Chloe Cash converted the PK for the Panthers to clinch the 1-0 win and advance to the finals on Sunday.

The Panthers outshot S&T 19-9 in the game and held a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Steins finished the game with five saves while Hasken led the Miners with three shots in 87 minutes of action.

Steins finished the season with 75 saves and closes her career with 229 saves, good for sixth all-time in program history. The 9-6-3 is S&T's first winning season since 2010 and included the program's first postseason appearance since 2014 and most All-GLVC selection since joining the league in 2005.
