Miners unable to slow down Bulldogs on Homecoming

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T was unable to slow down Truman State running back Cody Schrader Saturday afternoon at Allgood-Bailey Stadium, as the sophomore running back's big day helped lead the Bulldogs to a 38-21 win over the Miners on Homecoming at S&T.

Schrader rushed for 278 of the 328 yards recorded by the Bulldogs and had three long touchdown runs to send the Miners to their third straight loss and to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

The first of Schrader's scoring runs came on Truman's first play from scrimmage following the opening kickoff, as he went on a sweep to the left and dashed 74 yards down the sideline to give his team the early advantage.  Then on the third play of S&T's opening possession, Luke Hertzler (St. Louis, MO/Parkway North) had a pass went off the hands of a receiver and was picked off near midfield by Ben Watson.

Truman (5-1, 1-1 GLVC) turned that turnover into its second touchdown of the opening quarter, as Nolan Hair connected with Tate Crane on a seven-yard scoring pass.

S&T got on the scoreboard late in the first quarter as it put together a 13-play, 80-yard drive to reach the end zone.  Hertzler hit Tate Nickleberry (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) for 19 yards on a third-and-16 play to keep the drive going, then a completion to Payton McAlister (Decatur, TX/Decatur) moved the ball to the two before Max Conard (Blue Springs, MO/Blue Springs South) entered at quarterback and scored on the next play to cut the lead in half.

However, Schrader and the Bulldogs answered right back, as he followed a six-yard run with a 69-yard scoring run to give Truman a 21-7 lead.  Thanks to the two long scoring runs, Schrader had 169 yards rushing by the time the first quarter ended.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 24-7 as Josh Schiederer kicked a 30-yard field goal early in the second quarter.  S&T had a scoring chance late in the first half as it drove to the Bulldog 20-yard line, but Zach Glaess' (Queen Creek, AZ/Queen Creek) field goal attempt went wide to the left.  The Miners blocked a Truman field goal attempt before the first half ended, but couldn't sustain a drive early in the second half that ended with an incompletion on fourth down from the Truman 39.

Midway through the third quarter, Peyton Carr intercepted a Brennan Simms (Punta Gorda, FL/Charlotte) pass and brought it back 20 yards for a score, then in the final minute of the period, Schrader raced 61 yards for his third touchdown of the day to give the Bulldogs their largest lead of the contest.

The Miners reached the end zone twice in the fourth quarter, first on Justin Onwugbufor's (Wichita, KS/Northwest) 67-yard interception return for a touchdown and then in the final minute of play on an eight-yard scoring run by McAlister.

The Bulldogs had 483 yards of total offense Saturday to the Miners' 317.  Hertzler – one of four quarterbacks to see action for S&T Saturday -- completed 15-of-20 passes while he was on the field for 125 yards.  Nickleberry caught a game-high six passes for 73 yards, while McAlister had five catches as the Miners' leading receiver, Breon Michel (Colorado Springs, CO/Vista Ridge), was held to just three receptions for 39 yards.

McAlister led the S&T ground game with 59 yards on 14 carries.  Defensively, Onwugbufor had eight tackles to go along with his pick-six and Stefan Camplin (Raytown, MO/Raytown) also finished with eight stops and had a forced fumble in the game.

The loss was just the second for the Miners in their last 13 games at Allgood-Bailey Stadium, both coming to the Bulldogs.  Missouri S&T will look to get back on the winning track next Saturday when it hosts William Jewell at 1 p.m.
