ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Missouri S&T women's soccer team was back in action at Harlen C. Hunter Stadium for the second leg of their three-match road trip as they took the field opposite Lindenwood Friday night. The Miners (4-3-2, 3-2-2) and Lions (4-5-1, 4-3-1) played a hard-fought match that saw no score after 90 minutes, but that didn't last long as a 95th minute goal gave S&T their first overtime win of the season.
Lindenwood had the first two shots attempts of the night in the first 10 minutes of play but both were blocked by S&T defenders.
Sydney Gratz (Geneva, IL/Geneva) managed the first two shots of the night for the Miners but neither found their mark. A
Beth Roberts (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) shot in the 27th minute was on target but was saved by the Lindenwood keeper.
Kristin Steins (Ballwin, MO/Parkway South) made a key save in a frenetic sequence in the 36th minute, denying the Lions on a second chance shot immediately following a blocked attempt.
Melanie Kulig (Belleville, IL/Belleville West) and
Brittney Hahn (Madera, CA/Clovis West) both had looks on goal in the closing moments of the have but both were turned away by the goalie as the half ended scoreless.
S&T came out firing in the second half and managed the first six shot attempts of the period, but none found their mark as the scoreless match continued. The Lions turned up their offensive pressure in the final 20 minutes of the half and managed a pair of shots on goal, but Steins continued her stellar play in the net this season and saved both tries as regulation closed with no change to the scoreboard.
Heading to overtime for the fourth time this season, the Miners looked to end things right away, as a shot from Roberts came in the opening five second of the extra period but was saved by the keeper.
Paige VanDaele (Cottleville, MO/Francis Howell Central) had a look at a game-winner moments later but her shot attempt sailed wide. In the end, it was the leading goal scorer for the Miners in Gratz who walked things off, finding the lower left corner just into the 95th minute to give S&T their first overtime win of the season.
S&T finished the night with an 18-11 advantage in shots along with seven corner kick opportunities. Gratz led S&T with six shot attempts while
Danielle Hopkins (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) and Roberts had three each. Steins made four saves during the evening as she posted her fourth solo shutout of the season as S&T posted the team's sixth clean sheet of the campaign.
The Miners are back in action Sunday as they take on Maryville in St. Louis, with kickoff scheduled for 12 P.M.
