INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Missouri S&T women's soccer team opened their final road trip of the season Friday night at Key Stadium against Indianapolis. Despite being outshot 21-12, the Miners' (6-4-3, 5-3-3) defense was the definition of bend but not break as they held the Greyhounds (8-2-2, 6-2-2) scoreless for 110 minutes to play to a scoreless draw.
The Greyhounds came out firing to start the game, tallying the first seven shots of the game over the first 22 minutes of play.
Kristin Steins (Ballwin, MO/Parkway South) got some work in goal early, making a pair of saves in the sixth and 18th minutes to keep the game scoreless.
Lily Chung (Cottleville, MO/Francis Howell Central) managed the Miners' first shot of the night in the 32nd minute but it missed off-target high.
Allison Cole (Mansfield, TX/Mansfield) followed up with another shot moments later that also missed its mark high. UIndy managed four more shots before the half while a shot from Ally Haskin missed off left in the final minute of the half as the first 45 minutes closed with no score.
S&T managed a pair of early shots to begin the second half, with a try from Haskin being saved by the keeper in the 49th to remain scoreless. The two sides exchanged shots as the half progressed with neither side being able to find the first goal of the game. A shot from
Damita Mendoza (San Antonio, TX/Smithson Valley) was saved in the 74th minute as was another shot by Haken in the 77th minute.
Sydney Gratz (Geneva, IL/Geneva) had a pair of looks in the final 10 minutes but was turned away by the Greyhound keeper. Steins saved two more shots in the closing moments as regulation came to a close with no change in the score.
As things moved to overtime, the pace slowed as UIndy managed the sole shot attempt in the period, a play that was saved by Steins as the period came and went with no goals scored. The second overtime was much more action-packed as both sides looked to net the game winner. Both sides had looks on goal but couldn't cash them in as 110 minutes came and went with zeros on the scoredboard.
Steins finished with six saves in goal against 21 shots from UIndy to post her seventh shutout of the season. Gratz led S&T with five shots followed by Hasken with three.
The Miners close out their road schedule Sunday with a match against Southern Indiana at 12 P.M.
