Mendoza’s Goal Propels Miners to Win Over Bearcats

ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri S&T women's soccer team was back home Friday night at Allgood-Bailey Stadium for their second match of the season against the reigning Great Lakes Valley Conference Champion McKendree.

The Bearcats managed the first two shot attempts of the game, with the first being blocked in the seventh minute and the second being saved by Kristin Steins (Ballwin, MO/Parkway South) in the 18th minute. Steins again kept McKendree off the board in the 24th minute and 28th minute with two more saves. Steins made another save in the 39th minute, capping busy half against a potent McKendree offense. In the 42nd minute, Lily Chung (Cottleville, MO/Francis Howell Central) raced down the field and fired a shot that looked true but was snared by the Bearcats' keeper to keep things scoreless as the first half came to a close.

The Bearcats outshot the Miners 8-2 in the first 45 minutes of play and a 2-0 edge in corner kicks.

As the second half began it was the Miners who came out firing on offense. Melanie Kulig (Belleville, IL/Belleville West) and Sydney Gratz (Geneva, IL/Geneva) combined for three shots in the first four minutes of the half but none of them found their mark. Following a save by Steins in the 67th minute, the Miners charged down the field looking to take the lead. Damita Mendoza (San Antonio, TX/Smithson Valley) played a ball from Beth Roberts (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) beautifully from about 25 yards out into the top right corner of the goal over the keeper for her first goal of the season to make it 1-0 Miners.

A shot from Roberts in 87th minute was saved as S&T looked for an insurance goal in the closing moments as the pace picked up with the Bearcats looking for a way to net the equalizer. McKendree last gasp came as time expired, with shot on target but saved by Steins to cap the evening with a win.

Steins finished the match with six saves in goal as she posted her fifth solo shutout of the season.

Up next, the Miners play host to Missouri-St. Louis in a contest scheduled for 12 P.M. Sunday at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
