Miners return home looking to enhance playoff status

ROLLA, Mo. – With six games to play in the regular season, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team seeks to make a push to secure a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament as it will open that stretch with a pair of home contests this weekend.

The Miners, 5-4-1 overall and 4-3-1 (13 points) in the GLVC, will host McKendree Friday in a 7:30 p.m. game, then welcomes Missouri-St. Louis to town for a 2:30 p.m. match on Sunday.

S&T won its first four GLVC contests as part of a five-game winning streak, but has gone winless over its last four heading into Friday's game with the Bearcats.  The Miners have a 0-3-1 mark in those four games, which included a scoreless tie with Drury and a 1-0 loss Sunday to 14th-ranked Maryville with the only tally of the contest begin an own goal early in the second half.  Missouri S&T comes into play this week in a three-way tie for seventh place in the GLVC standings.

Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) continues to lead the Miners in scoring with two goals and two assists for six points, while Luan Barbosa (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio SESI) has also scored twice for the Miners this season.  Leyton Harper (Andover, KS/Central) has a goal and two assists for four points as the Miners have had nine different players score goals this season and four others who have at least recorded an assist.

Miner goalkeeper Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) currently owns a goals against average of 1.29 and has made 30 saves in 560 minutes of action, while Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) has 19 saves in 379-plus minutes with a 1.66 goals against mark.

ABOUT McKENDREE: The Bearcats are currently tied for the GLVC lead in points with 19 – even with second-ranked Indianapolis – and are second in the conference in goals scored with 22.  McKendree brings a five-game winning streak into Friday's match after blanking Rockhurst 2-0 Sunday and holds marks of 6-2-2 overall and 6-2-1 in conference play.

James Stone leads the Bearcats in scoring with eight goals and an assist for 17 points; he leads the GLVC in goals and is second in points through Sunday's games.  Gonzalo Correa has scored four times this season, while Fetoil Hyke, Diego Tapia-Fraites and Cole Gerstenberger all have two goals apiece.

Alvaro Cortazar has played every minute in goal for McKendree this season and has made 52 saves in 1,088 minutes.  He brings a 1.32 goals against average into Friday's match.

ABOUT MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS: The Tritons shut out Southwest Baptist 4-0 on Sunday to even their overall record at 5-5-1 and GLVC mark at 4-4-1, where they are among the three teams tied for seventh place with 13 points.

UMSL got goals from four different players in the win over SBU, one of them being Arman Kovic who has scored in four of the Tritons' last five games.  He has a team-high six goals on the season, while Garrett Bass has hit the net three times and Bradley Fritsche and Drew Schenk have scored two goals apiece.

Jordan Hurt has played 558 minutes in goal for the Tritons this season and has a 1.61 goals against average to go along 17 saves, while Austin Reis has 17 saves as well in 363 minutes and owns a 1.24 goals against mark.  UMSL will face Maryville Friday before traveling to Rolla for the Sunday matchup with the Miners.
