ROLLA, Mo. -- Missouri S&T will attempt to get back into the win column Saturday afternoon as it plays host to a William Jewell squad seeking its first triumph of the year as they face off here in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on Church & Community Organization Day as well as Youth Football Day at S&T.
The Miners are looking to snap a three-game losing streak Saturday as they look to rebound from a 38-21 loss last week to Truman State, a setback that dropped the Miners to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in GLVC play.
Even though it was held to a season-low 317 yards by Truman, S&T still ranks among the NCAA Division II leaders in total offense with an average of 479.5 yards per game that ranks eighth in the nation. The Miners are second in the GLVC in passing with an average of 288.2 yards per game, largely due to the performance of wide receiver
Breon Michel (Colorado Springs, CO/Vista Ridge) who has caught a league-high 39 passes for 753 yards and nine touchdowns. Michel is one of two receivers in the GLVC averaging more than 100 yards per game in receptions entering play this weekend.
S&T has used three quarterbacks for the bulk of the time this season, with
Luke Hertzler (St. Louis, MO/Parkway North) throwing for 808 yards and eight touchdowns,
Brennan Simms (Punta Gorda, FL/Charlotte) for 699 yards and five scores and
Max Conard (Blue Springs, MO/Blue Springs South) for 192 yards and three touchdowns. The Miners have averaged 191.3 yards per game on the ground as well, led by
Aaron Moya's (Canutillo, TX/Canutillo) 429 yards that ranks sixth in the conference.
Linebacker
Ben Straatmann (Washington, MO/Washington) continues to lead the Miners with 45 tackles and heads the GLVC with 12.5 stops for a loss and 7.5 sacks.
Justin Onwugbufor (Wichita, KS/Northwest) has 44 tackles this season and
Cameron Clemons (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran North) is third in the GLVC with eight passes defended, including seven breakups.
ABOUT WILLIAM JEWELL: The Cardinals are in search of their first victory of the 2021 campaign after falling to 0-6 and 0-2 in the GLVC last Saturday following a 55-10 loss at the hands of Southwest Baptist. SBU racked up 514 passing yards, the third-most every posted by a team in GLVC history, as it handed William Jewell its 19th straight setback dating back to the 2019 campaign.
Quarterback Anthony Pritzel, who accounted for the lone Jewell touchdown in the loss to SBU on a 21-yard scoring run, has thrown for 841 yards and five touchdowns on the season while completing 47.1 percent of his passes. His leading target has been Jalik Jaggwe with 26 receptions – sixth-most in the GLVC – for 320 yards and three touchdowns. Jesse Thomas has made 16 catches for 159 yards and Grant Latina has added 15 receptions for 179 yards.
