ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Playing its final road game of the season Saturday, Missouri S&T's men's basketball team gave Lewis a tussle on its Senior Day before the Flyers got a couple of late baskets to hold off the Miners 67-63 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference contest.
CJ Hedgepeth (Evansville, IN/Harrison) hit a three-pointer 12 seconds into play to give S&T (5-17, 3-13 GLVC) a lead it would hold for the entire first half. The Miners would build their lead to double figures by the 4:21 mark of the first half on a three-pointer by
Yahmir Muhammad (Rockford, IL/Auburn) and would take their largest lead with just over a minute to play in the half on a basket by Hedgepeth at 31-20.
S&T, who shot 46.4 percent in the first half, would take one more 11-point lead in the half on a three-pointer by
Dulan Scott (Chicago, IL/Farragut Academy) just before Lewis' Dre Bell scored with four seconds remaining in the period to make it 34-25 at the intermission.
The Flyers (13-11, 8-8 GLVC) would turn the tables at the start of the second half, outscoring the Miners 13-3 over the first four-plus minutes and took their first lead of the contest on a three-pointer by Bell. From that point on, it became a see-saw affair between the teams, as there were four ties and 14 additional lead changes in the second half after the Bell triple.
Neither side had a lead of more than two points until Hedgepeth hit a three-pointer at the 10:51 mark to give S&T a 51-48 advantage. Lewis answered back with four straight points to regain the lead, only to see the Miners go back in front on a lay-in by
Mitch Fairless (St. Charles, MO/Duchesne) with 9:05 remaining.
Scott, who led the Miners with 21 points while playing only a few miles from his hometown of Chicago, gave S&T its last lead with 4:25 to play when he sank two free throws. Bell knocked down a three-pointer 16 seconds later to give the Flyers a 61-59 lead and Lewis would remain in the lead for the duration.
The Miners trailed by two with 3:14 to go, but couldn't take advantage of a scoreless drought by the Flyers as they were unable to score themselves until
Dawson Berry (Centralia, IL/Centralia) made the second of two free throws with 1:01 left to cut the lead to one. Anthony D'Avanzo scored with 46 seconds to go to extend the Flyer lead to three, but Hedgepeth went to the line with 37 seconds remaining and made one of two to make it a two-point game again.
The Miners decided not to foul with the differential on the shot clock, but Adam Pischke hit a shot as the clock was running down to extend the Lewis lead to four with under 10 seconds to play.
Hedgepeth was the only other Miner in double figures with 13 points as S&T shot 39.7 percent in the game. The Miners hit 46.4 percent of their shots in the first half, but were held to 10-of-30 shooting over the final 20 minutes. S&T did play on even terms with the Flyers on the boards as each team had 37 apiece;
Chima Oduocha (Hoffman Estates, IL/Conant) led the Miners with 11 in the game.
Bell led all scorers in the game with 24 points, while D'Avanzo had 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Flyers.
The Miners will play their final four games of the 2019-20 season at Gibson Arena, beginning with Thursday's 7:30 p.m. contest against Bellarmine.
