ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's swimming team recorded the fastest times in eight events Friday night as they won their final dual meet of the season by topping Truman State 122-71 in its final meet prior to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships, which begins on Feb. 12 in Crawfordsville, Ind.
S&T swept the top three spots in five events, led by
Tim Samuelsen (Stavanger, Norway/St. Svithun VGS) in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a winning time of 9:40.35 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:41.42,
Andy Huffman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:57.82 and 200-yard breaststroke in 2:07.46 and
Chris Betts (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch) in the 100-yard freestyle in 46.85 seconds.
Betts added a second event win Friday in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.11 seconds, while firsts were also achieved by
Aaron Taske (Fairfield, OH/Saint Xavier) in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:53.18 and
Mark Cavanaugh (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista) in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:56.76.
The Miners also had the fastest time in the 400-yard freestyle relay of 3:09.98, which was posted by the team of
Colten Becker (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest),
Nolan Fergus (Aurora, IL/Marmion Academy), Taske and Betts. The Miners' second relay team in that event had the second-fastest time of 3:11.62, which came from the group of
Marco Flores (San Pedro Sula, Honduras/SERAN Private Bilingual School), Josh Umrysh, Cavanaugh and
Alec Davis (Joplin, MO/Joplin).
Second place performances were also produced by
Alex Graham (Parker, TX/Homeschooled) in the 1,000-freestyle in 9:49.43, Davis in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.49, Flores in the 50-freestyle in 21.26 seconds,
Jay Mercer (Kansas City, MO/Whitefield Academy) in the 200-IM in 1:59.13, Huffman in the 200-butterfly in 1:57.09, Becker in the 100-freestyle in 47.13 seconds, Connor Wiedemeier in the 200-backstroke in 1:57.13, Taske in the 500-freestyle in 4:43.59 and
Noah Baden (Rose Hill, KS/Rose Hill) in the 200-breaststroke in 2:10.40.
S&T's 400-yard medley relay team of
Dylan Friesz (Round Rock, TX/Hutto),
Alejandro Chavez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Colegiao de Bachilles), Taske and Becker also finished second with a time of 3:29.60, while the team of Cavanaugh, Mercer, Fergus and
Cole Akal (Alton, IL/Alton) took third in 3:31.65.
S&T got third place showings from
Sam Weber (Portage, MI/Portage Central) in the 1,000-freestyle in 10:12.85, Wiedemeier in the 200-freestyle in 1:48.31,
Daniel Matlock (Peoria, IL/Richwoods) in the 200-IM in 2:00.45, Fergus in the 200-butterfly in 1:59.40, Umrysh in the 100-freestyle in 47.95 seconds, Graham in the 500-freestyle in 4:50.54 and Chavez in the 200-breaststroke in 2:10.91.
