ROLLA, Mo. – After knocking off a pair of defending conference champions in each of the last two weeks, Missouri S&T's football team will open its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule Saturday when it takes on William Jewell in a 5 p.m. contest in Liberty, Mo.
The Miners bring a 2-1 record into Saturday's game and have scored a school record 128 points in those three games, including 49 last Saturday in their 49-21 victory over Miles at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. S&T will be taking on a William Jewell team that opened its conference slate last week by dropping a 28-16 decision at Lindenwood; the Cardinals are 1-2 overall on the season.
ABOUT THE MINERS: For the second straight week, the Miner offense put up big numbers and won for the second week in a row, as they accumulated 495 yards of total offense in its victory over Miles.
Brennan Simms (Punta Gorda, FL/Charlotte), named Monday as the GLVC's offensive player of the week, had a hand in all six of the Miners' offensive touchdowns in the win as he ran for two scores and threw for four more. Simms, who has accounted for 13 touchdowns thus far on the season, completed 24-of-32 passes for 268 yards in the contest and has connected on 64.6 percent of his throws this year for 747 yards and nine touchdowns.
Josh Brown (Gainesville, FL/North Marion HS) has caught a team-high 14 passes for 310 yards and a score, while
Cameron Clemons (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran North) has 10 catches on the year and
Logan Armontrout (Centralia, MO/Centralia) has four of his seven receptions for touchdowns, including three in Saturday's win.
Aaron Moya (Canutillo, TX/Canutillo) leads the Miners with 245 yards on the ground as S&T has averaged 228.7 rushing yards per game. S&T is one of just two teams in NCAA Division II that ranks in the top 20 nationally in four offensive categories (total offense, rushing, passing and scoring) and also has the best third down conversion percentage in Division II at 61.5 percent.
Defensively, the Miners recorded a defensive score for the second straight week when linebacker
Stefan Camplin (Raytown, MO/Raytown) returned an interception 79 yards for a touchdown. Camplin led the Miners with eight tackles in the win, which included two stops for a loss and was named as the GLVC's defensive player of the week.
Camplin currently leads the Miners with 22 tackles and two interceptions, while safety
Justin Onwugbufor (Maize, KS/Northwest) has made 21 stops and
Dontay White (Florissant, MO/Hazelwood Central) and
Ryan Kirkendall (Silsbee, TX/Silsbee) have 17 apiece. Kirkendall also has three of the Miners' 14 tackles for a loss this season.
ABOUT WILLIAM JEWELL: The Cardinals opened their 2019 campaign with a 29-9 victory over Southwest Baptist in a non-conference matchup, but have since dropped games to West Texas A&M 49-21 and Lindenwood by a count of 28-16 last Saturday in St. Charles in their GLVC opener. William Jewell outscored the Lions 13-0 in the second half after trailing 28-3 at halftime.
Quarterback Will Schneider, who scored both of William Jewell's touchdowns in the Lindenwood contest, has completed 46.5 percent of his passes this season for 627 yards and four touchdowns, while also running for four on the year. Schneider is the Cardinals' second-leading rusher with 145 yards, trailing only Brad Dee who has 148 yards this season.
Jalik Jaggwe has caught two of Schneider's touchdown throws and leads the Cardinals with 12 receptions for 252 yards, averaging 21 yards per reception. Ishmial Mitchell has eight receptions on the year and TJ Guillory has made seven catches.
The Cardinal defense, which has allowed 414.3 yards per game this season, has been paced by linebacker Brock Geisz with 38 tackles. Jack Gordon has made 28 stops from his safety position, while Antonio Wabanimkee has been in on 23 stops. Linebacker Cameron McKasson has two sacks among his team-high 4.5 tackles for a loss.
