Cardinals knock off Miners in fast-paced contest

ROLLA, Mo. – For the second time this season, Missouri S&T was unable to keep pace with the Great Lakes Valley Conference's highest scoring team as the Miners succumbed to William Jewell Thursday night at Gibson Arena by the score of 98-85.

The Miners (5-20, 3-14 GLVC) lost 108-93 last month to the Cardinals (12-17, 5-11 GLVC) in Liberty, Mo., and Thursday's game turned into another up-tempo affair that favored Jewell, who came into the game averaging 87.6 points per game.  After the Miners' Romain Louiserre (La Ferte Alais, France/Fredrick Fays) scored the opening basket of the game, the Cardinals ran off the next eight points to take the lead.

S&T hung in with the Cardinals for most of the first half and moved in front at 22-21 on a jumper by Jalen Myers (Shorewood, IL/Minooka) midway through the period.  A little over two minutes later, a CJ Hedgepeth (Evansville, IN/Harrison) lay-in off an assist by Myers knotted the score at 29 before Jewell's Byron Harp knocked down a three-pointer to spark a 19-10 surge by the Cardinals to close the first half.

Most of the early scoring damage by Jewell came from freshman Mason Alexander, who scored 17 points and hit five of the Cardinals' 13 three-point baskets in the first 20 minutes.   The second half turned into the Pharroh Gordon Show, as he tallied 18 of his game-high 28 points after the intermission.

The Miners drew within six at 58-52 after Hedgepeth – who led the Miners with a career-high 26 points – scored at the 15:10 mark of the second half, but the Cardinals rattled off 11 straight points over the two minutes to suddenly hold a 17-point lead and maintained the double-figure advantage for the balance of the contest.

William Jewell shot 56.3 percent in the second half and finished the game at 53.8 percent, while the Miners ended up shooting 47.4 percent on the night.  Hedgepeth was joined in double figures by Louiserre, who scored a season-high 17 point and Dulan Scott (Chicago, IL/Farragut Academy), who finished with 12.

The Cardinals had four in double figures, as Gordon, Alexander, Keith Hayes and Eysan Wiley combined to score all but 16 of Jewell's 98 points.

The Miners close out the 2018-19 campaign Saturday when they host Rockhurst at 3 p.m.  Missouri S&T's five seniors will be honored after the conclusion of the women's contest and prior to warm-ups for its game with the Hawks, who saw their six-game winning streak end Thursday in a 79-71 loss at Drury.
