Late lead slips away from Miners in loss to Quincy

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's basketball team let an opportunity to get a win in Great Lakes Valley Conference play slip through its grasp Saturday afternoon at Gibson Arena, as Quincy outscored the Miners 12-2 over the final 3:10 and came away with a 71-67 victory on Fort Leonard Wood/Military Appreciation Day at S&T.

The Miners (3-16, 1-10 GLVC) led 65-59 following a basket by Juwan Miller (Kitchener, Ont./Huron Heights) with 3:24 remaining, but the Hawks – in part due to a pair of steals and lay-ups by Demetrius Houston on back-to-back possessions – erased that lead and Quincy (9-13, 3-9 GLVC) took the lead for good when Houston hit two free throws with 1:10 remaining.

CJ Hedgepeth (Evansville, IN/Harrison) made a pair of free throws with 2:11 left to give the Miners the lead back at 67-66, but S&T went scoreless over the balance of the contest.  The Miners committed a turnover with just over a minute to play, then Marcus Hinton got the rebound off his own missed shot and the Hawks would get another offensive rebound after a miss moments later, forcing the Miners to foul.

Jah-Kobe Womack hit both free throws with 11 seconds remaining to extend the lead to three and the Hawks rebounded the miss on a contested three-point try by Ervin Sarajlic (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) to secure the victory.

Quincy led for much of the first half, holding as much as an eight-point lead around the midway point of the period.  The Miners clawed back and took their first lead since the opening basket of the game at the 4:05 mark on a three-pointer by Juwan Miller (Kitchener, Ont./Huron Heights).

The Hawks took the lead back, but the Miners regained the advantage right before halftime when Hedgepeth drained a three-pointer to give S&T a 30-29 lead at the break.

Trailing by five with 8:05 to go, S&T outscored Quincy 14-3 over the next four minutes to take its largest lead of the contest after a steal and dunk by Dulan Scott (Chicago, IL/Farragut Academy).  After Tanner Stuckman made two free throws for the Hawks, Miller answered with a basket to restore the Miners' six-point lead before a Hinton basket and the two steals and baskets – the latter turning into a three-point play – by Houston put the Hawks back into the lead with 2:39 to go.

Scott tied his career high with 24 points in the contest, while Hedgepeth also ended up in double figures with 12.  The Miners shot 44.6 percent on the afternoon while holding the Hawks to 42.6 percent.

Houston led all scorers in the contest with 25 points as Quincy had four players score in double figures.

The Miners continue their five-game homestand Thursday when they host a Missouri-St. Louis that rallied from a 16-point deficit with 4:25 left to beat William Jewell 86-84 Saturday afternoon.  Thursday's game begins at 7:30 p.m. at Gibson Arena.
