Miners Season Comes to an End in Opening Round of GLVC Tournament

EAST PEORIA, ILL.- The Miners season came to an abrupt end tonight in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament. The eight-seeded Miners faced off against the top-seeded Hawks of Rockhurst University and fell in straight sets (18-25, 13-25, 17-25).

S&T dug themselves a hole to open set one, finding themselves down 9-2 early. The Miners would get a 7-2 rally going late in the set that was capped with a big kill from Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve). While Missouri S&T hung with the Hawks, Rockhurst's early lead would give them the edge to take the 25-18 set one win.

It was all RU in the second set, taking the 25-13 win and holding the Miners to just seven kills.

The Miners came out hot in the third set; after consecutive kills from Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve), Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy), and Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State), S&T sat just four points behind the Hawks. They would get another push to keep them in the game with back-to-back kills from Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) to make it 14-11.

While Missouri S&T hung with Rockhurst in the third set, a late push from the Hawks offense secured them the 25-17 set three win and the 3-0 match win.

Hitters Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) and Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) led the way for the Miners with 10 kills each while Schlader picked up her 18th double-double of the season with 15 digs. Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) picked up a team second-best 14 digs while Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) dished out 28 assists.

The Miners finish the 2019 season 21-10 overall, the best season record since the 2015 season.
