ROLLA, Mo. – With wins in four consecutive games, Missouri S&T's football team will take its show on the road for the next three weeks as it opens a big stretch of its schedule Saturday by stepping outside of the Great Lakes Valley Conference to face Texas Southern in Houston, Texas. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.
The Miners – who have road dates with the GLVC's two undefeated and nationally-ranked teams immediately following this weekend's game – will bring a 4-1 record into Saturday's clash against the Tigers from the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision ranks. Texas Southern is still seeking its first win of the season, but dropped an overtime decision in its last outing Saturday when it fell at Alabama A&M.
ABOUT THE MINERS: S&T extended its winning streak to four as it grinded out a 21-13 win Saturday over Quincy on Homecoming at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. The Miners scored the first time they got the ball after
Vidal Daniels (Oakland, CA/Mountain Pointe) intercepted a pass on the Hawks' first possession to set up a scoring drive that culminated with a
Deshawn Jones (Olympia Fields, IL/Rich Central) touchdown run.
However, it was a touchdown pass from
Brennan Simms (Punta Gorda, FL/Charlotte) – his 13
th of the season – to
Josh Brown (Gainesville, FL/North Marion HS) in the final minute of the first half that put S&T in front for good as the Miner defense was able to hold Quincy scoreless for the bulk of the contest.
S&T held the Hawk offense to just 71 yards rushing and 382 total yards in the game as it got big games from cornerback
Bryce Stevenson (Pearland, TX/Dawson), defensive end
Tershawn Wharton (University City, MO/University City) and linebacker
Dontay White (Florissant, MO/Hazelwood Central). Stevenson made 10 tackles on the afternoon, while Wharton had eight stops including one of S&T's five quarterback sacks and White finished with 2.5 tackles for a loss among his nine tackles.
Safety
Justin Onwugbufor (Maize, KS/Northwest) leads the Miners with 31 tackles on the season, while White and fellow linebacker
Stefan Camplin (Raytown, MO/Raytown) have been in on 29 stops apiece.
Simms posted career highs in the passing department Saturday with 30 completions in 44 attempts for 345 yards; he has completed 65.8 percent of his passes on the year (12
