ROLLA, Mo. – A matchup featuring a pair of 5-1 teams is on tap for Saturday afternoon as Missouri S&T's football team heads to Kirksville, Mo., to take on Truman State in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. at Stokes Stadium.
The Miners come into Saturday's game sporting a five-game winning streak after knocking off Texas Southern 23-20 Saturday, while the Bulldogs had a five-game winning streak halted in sudden fashion when Lindenwood scored 14 points in the final 1:16 to pull out a 28-24 win in St. Charles. Missouri S&T is undefeated in GLVC play at 2-0, while Truman is 2-1 in conference play.
ABOUT THE MINERS: S&T took the lead on the opening drive of the second half Saturday and never relinquished it as it pulled out the victory over the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision foe. The Miners went in front on the second of three
Ben Styron (Harrisonville, MO/Harrisonville) field goals and held Texas Southern to just a field goal in the second half; the Tigers missed a potential game-tying field goal in the final seconds.
The Miner defense was also part of the scoring last week, as
Ryan Kirkendall (Silsbee, TX/Silsbee) returned an interception 18 yards for a touchdown for S&T's third interception return for a score this season. The Miners enter Saturday's game having allowed 430.2 yards per game, but are third in the GLVC in scoring defense as they have given up just 21.7 points per contest.
Safety
Justin Onwugbufor (Maize, KS/Northwest) leads the Miners defensively with 40 tackles on the season, while
Stefan Camplin (Raytown, MO/Raytown) has 39 tackles and two of S&T's 10 interceptions on the season. Fellow linebacker
Dontay White (Florissant, MO/Hazelwood Central) has been in on 35 tackles, while defensive linemen
Tershawn Wharton (University City, MO/University City) and Joe Boettcher have combined for 9.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
Missouri S&T enters the weekend ranked second in the GLVC in total offense at 482.8 yards per game and is third in scoring with an average of 35.5 points per contest. Quarterback
Brennan Simms (Punta Gorda, FL/Charlotte) is second in the GLVC with his average of 267.8 yards per game through the air, as he has completed 61.5 percent of his throws for 1,607 yards and 13 touchdowns and has also ran for five more scores, including one in Saturday's win.
His top target has been
Josh Brown (Gainesville, FL/North Marion HS) with 28 receptions for 471 yards and four touchdowns, while
Logan Armontrout (Centralia, MO/Centralia) has hauled in 25 throws for 396 yards and four touchdowns as well.
Deshawn Jones (Olympia Fields, IL/Rich Central) had a season-high 96 yards rushing in Saturday's contest and leads the Miners with 394 yards on the season; he, along with
Aaron Moya (Canutillo, TX/Canutillo) and
Payton McAlister (Decatur, TX/Decatur), have combined for 1,052 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.
Styron had his best day in the kicking department Saturday with his three field goals and his last of 41 yards made him the S&T career leader in successful field goals of 40 yards or more with his ninth.
ABOUT TRUMAN STATE: The Bulldogs carried a top-25 ranking (No. 24 in both polls) into last week's game at Lindenwood and led 24-7 early in the fourth quarter, but the Lions scored 21 unanswered points to pull out a 28-24 win to hand Truman its first loss in six games. Truman had outscored its opponents 222-54 prior to the Lions' fourth quarter rally last week and has been one of the top defensive teams in the conference thus far, allowing just 315.8 yards per game to rank second in total defense.
Safety Jordan Siegel and linebacker Reed McBroom lead the Bulldogs in tackles with 34 apiece, with McBroom also making three of the team's 13 quarterback sacks this season. Truman has forced its opponents into 15 turnovers through six games and has scored on a drive following a turnover (or on the turnover itself) in each of its last five games.
Quarterback Jaden Barr has completed 65.1 percent of his passes this season for 956 yards and seven touchdowns. His top target has been running back Jordan Salima with 20 receptions, but has spread the wealth as four Bulldogs enter play this weekend with at least 16 catches apiece.
Salima is also the top rusher in a potent running attack with 451 yards on the season and five touchdowns, as the Bulldogs rank second in the GLVC with an average of 213.2 yards per game on the ground. Cody Schrader has added 344 yards in the rushing department.
