ROLLA, Mo. -- Missouri S&T welcomes its alumni back to campus this weekend for Homecoming and also seeks its fourth straight victory on the gridiron as the Miners play host to Quincy in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. Saturday's contest kicks off at 1 p.m.
Both teams opened up their GLVC slates last week, with the Miners winning a weather-delayed game at William Jewell by the score of 41-24 and the Hawks falling at home in their conference opener 63-14 at the hands of undefeated Truman State. Missouri S&T is 3-1 on the year, while the Hawks enter the game at 2-2.
The two teams have had some entertaining games in recent years, including last October's contest in Quincy where the Miners hung on for a 20-13 win. The Hawks were deep in S&T territory in the final minute, but
Bo Brooks (Canutillo, TX/Canutillo) recovered a fumble to secure the win for the Miners.
ABOUT THE MINERS: After having to wait out a weather delay that forced the resumption of the game at William Jewell to Sunday, the Miners went over the 40-point mark for the third straight week in their 41-24 win over the Cardinals in Liberty, Mo.
Deshawn Jones (Olympia Fields, IL/Rich Central) scored three touchdowns for S&T in the victory, which included a record-breaking score as his first touchdown was the 30th rushing touchdown of his career, topping a long-standing mark held by Terry Ryan. Jones, who is nearing the 3,000-yard mark in rushing yards for his career, added another score on the ground and also caught one of
Brennan Simms' (Punta Gorda, FL/Charlotte) three touchdown throws in the contest.
Simms threw for a career-high 296 yards in the victory and on the season, has completed 65 percent of his throws for 1,043 yards and 12 touchdowns; the latter two figures lead the GLVC as play begins this week. Simms has accounted for 16 S&T touchdowns, the second-most by an S&T quarterback through four games.
S&T is averaging a league-high 503.8 yards of total offense, with the trio of Jones,
Aaron Moya (Canutillo, TX/Canutillo) and
Payton McAlister (Decatur, TX/Decatur) -- all of whom scored touchdowns at Jewell -- combining for 750 rushing yards through the first four games.
Josh Brown (Gainesville, FL/North Marion HS) leads the Miner receivers with 21 catches for 386 yards, while
Logan Armontrout (Centralia, MO/Centralia) has 13 receptions and McAlister has hauled in 12 balls. A total of 11 Miners have caught passes this season and six of them have at one touchdown reception.
Defensively, the Miners have been paced by linebacker
Stefan Camplin (Raytown, MO/Raytown), who has 27 tackles on the year and was named as the GLVC defensive player of the week following S&T's last home game.
Justin Onwugbufor (Maize, KS/Northwest) has 26 tackles on the season and
Dontay White (Florissant, MO/Hazelwood Central) has recorded 20. The Miners have had 21 tackles for a loss in the first four weeks of the 2019 season.
ABOUT QUINCY: The Hawks were tied with Truman State late in the first quarter last week following a Jalen Griffin touchdown run, but the Bulldogs rattled off 35 unanswered points and handed Quincy its second straight loss with a 63-14 triumph.
Quincy opened the year with back-to-back wins over Central State and Kentucky Wesleyan, but has been outscored 96-21 in losses to Wayne State (Mich.) and Truman in the last two weeks.
Quarterback Andrew Rund has completed 74-of-141 throws on the season for 803 yards and four touchdowns, with Western Illinois transfer Brandon Gaston leading the way among the receivers with 12 catches for 166 yards. Marlin Washington also has 12 receptions this season that includes two for scores, while Paul Sullivan has also hauled in 12 passes.
Griffin leads the Hawks in rushing with 278 yards and five touchdowns and is aided in that department by Keenan Hailey with his 114 yards on the ground.
Quincy's defense is paced by linebacker Peyten Chappel with 40 tackles and a GLVC-high nine for a loss, while fellow linebacker Sam Mock has 37 stops and Keenan Stegall has been in on 35 tackles. Marvion Harris has picked off three passes in the secondary.
The Hawks allowed 560 yards of total offense to Truman State last week and has given up 449.8 yards per contest on the season.
