LEBANON, IL- The Miners did not see their weekend end the way they wanted to. The Bearcats of McKendree University had a dominating fourth quarter to secure the game 76-63.
The Miners started the game cold, getting outscored 13-4 in the opening four minutes of the game and shooting just 33% from the field.
Back-to-back baskets from
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) and
Ashley Harvey (Raytown, Mo./Raytown) along with two made free-throws from Kabetske would get S&T back within three. The Miners defense couldn't catch a break as McKendree finished the quarter with a 14-4 run to take a 27-14 lead after the first 10 minutes.
Just as the Bearcats did in the first quarter, the Miners came out hot in the second. They cut their deficit to as low as two after
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) drained a three-pointer at the top of the key with 43 seconds left in the half. A layup from Jenna Krause in the final seconds of the half would put McKendree up 44-40 going into the break.
Despite their slow start in the opening quarter, the Miners shot 43% from the field and went 2-3 from long range in the first half.
S&T and McKendree traded baskets in the third quarter, combining for 31 points. The Miners got within one of the Bearcats at the very end of the quarter when
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) found
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) in the paint for an easy lay-up to make it 58-57.
S&T found themselves with the lead just 65 seconds into the final quarter when
Michaela Davis (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) hit a jump shot just inside the three-point line. That lead would be short-lived as McKendree finished the game on an 18-4 run to take game 76-63.
Michaela Davis (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) had a career day with a game leading 19 points on 9-12 shooting.
