Miners fall to Flyers in GLVC home opener

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's basketball team was unable to sustain a run it made late in the first half and dropped a 73-58 Great Lakes Valley Conference decision Thursday night to Lewis at Gibson Arena.

After trailing by as much as 11 in the first half, the Miners (2-10, 0-4 GLVC) used a 12-4 spurt to draw to within three by the 3:21 mark of the half.  But after S&T drew to within a possession, the Flyers (10-2, 3-1 GLVC) finished the first half by scoring the final eight points to back up by 11 at the intermission, then ran off another 8-0 run to begin the second half to extend that lead to 19.

The Miners trailed 27-16 following an Anthony D'Avanzo basket with 7:31 to go in the half and were still down by nine just over two minutes, but S&T began chipping away at the margin and got baskets by CJ Hedgepeth (Evansville, IN/Harrison), Yahmir Muhammad (Rockford, IL/Auburn) and Romain Louiserre (La Ferte Alais, France/Fredrick Fays) to draw to within three.

Following a Lewis timeout, Brandon McCombs scored inside to begin turning the tide back in the other direction, as S&T was unable to score over the final 3:21 of the half.

The Flyers pushed the margin to 19 in the first two minutes of the second half and would eventually lead by as many as 27 before the Miners scored 14 of the final 16 points of the contest to bring the final margin down to 15.

Muhammad finished with 12 points to lead the Miners and fellow freshman Mitch Fairless (St. Charles, MO/Duchesne) recorded his first double figure game at S&T with 10.  The Miners also outrebounded the Flyers 39-31, but shot only 37.9 percent from the field and made just three-of-21 from three-point range.

Lewis, who shot just under 50 percent for the game, got 16 points, seven assists and five steals from Kendale McCullum as he led three Flyers in double figures.

The Miners close their weekend homestand Saturday against Indianapolis in a 3 p.m. contest at Gibson Arena.  The Greyhounds (10-4, 3-1 GLVC) edged Drury 71-70 Thursday night in Springfield.
