Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri S&T women's volleyball team, behind Emilee Schlader's (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) match-high 19 kills, propelled the Miners to a convincing 3-0 non-conference road win over instate foe Missouri Southern this Tuesday (Sept. 4) evening at MSSU's Young Gym.    
 
Missouri S&T, which won for the fourth time in its last five outings, improves to 7-2 overall this season.  With the loss, Missouri Southern's overall record dips to 0-5 for the 2018 campaign. 
 
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston), a junior outside hitter, also registered a .200 hitting percentage and garnered six digs. Contributing six kills was senior right-side hitter Ellen Schulz (Wildwood, Mo./Eureka) while freshman middle hitter Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) added five kills to go with a .300 attack percentage.  Redshirt sophomore setter Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) racked up a match-best 25 assists and freshman setter Sarah Cavanaugh (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Thunder Ridge) provided 10 assists for the Miners, who concluded the match outhitting their opponent .186 to .050.
 
S&T accumulated eight service aces and block assists apiece.  Cavanaugh led the way with four aces while Schulz, O'Boyle, and junior middle hitter Caroline Dykes (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) each amassed two block assists.
 
Junior defensive specialist-libero Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) was the lone Miner to notch double-figure digs with a match-leading 16 total.  Junior defensive specialist-libero Eva Mich (St. Peters, Mo./Francis Howell Central) and Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) chipped in on the defensive side with eight digs apiece.
 
Missouri Southern's Janelle Brehm paced the Lions with 11 digs and Alicia Pickett netted six block assists.  Morgan Nash set up 16 assists for MSSU, which received a squad-best seven-kill effort from Sydney Dose. 
  
Set 1: S&T 25 – MSSU 14
A .286 S&T hitting percentage and a .036 attack percentage by Missouri Southern resulted in a dominating opening-set decision for the Miners, who received seven kills from Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston).  After the Lions tallied the set's first point, it was all S&T from there to the finish as the Miners would take a 15-9 lead.  MSSU managed to trim its deficit to five points at 16-11 before S&T went on a 10-3 run to close the set out.
 
Set 2: S&T 25 – MSSU 21
The second set was a close one throughout, which saw S&T fall behind early at 8-4.  However, the Miners went ahead 17-13 at one juncture only to see the Lions roar back to pull into a 19-all deadlock.  After the teams exchanged a point apiece, S&T tallied four consecutive points to go up 24-20 and a MSSU service error would result in the Miners' winning point.  S&T finished the set hitting at a .140 clip while the Lions struggled by recording a -.028 attack percentage.
 
Set 3: S&T 25 – MSSU 21
A 5-0 MSSU run started off the set before S&T outscored its hosts 11-6 to draw into an 11-all tie. A 10-2 scoring spurt by the Miners followed as the visitors went up 20-13 following a kill by freshman right side-middle hitter Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve). The Lions rallied to get within three at 24-21, but had no room for error at that point as Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) hammered the set-clinching point for the Miners. S&T posted a .170 hitting percentage in comparison to MSSU's .135 attack proficiency.  
 
Up Next: S&T returns to the court this weekend (Sept. 7-8) to begin Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) action.  The Miners open the home portion of their 2018 schedule this Friday (Sept. 7) night hosting the nationally eighth-ranked Rockhurst Hawks in a 7 p.m. (CT) contest at S&T's Gibson Arena in Rolla, Mo.
