GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Missouri S&T got a goal in the final seconds of regulation time Tuesday afternoon to force overtime, but allowed a goal late in the first extra period and suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Davenport to close out its season-opening road trip.
Trailing by a goal, S&T got a free kick opportunity near midfield and
Unnar Ulfarsson's (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik) long drive towards the goal was headed in by
Austin Parks (Rolla, MO/Rolla) with 11 seconds left on the clock to force the contest past the 90-minute mark.
However, with under two minutes to go in overtime, the Panthers got the game-winner as the Miners stopped an initial free kick, but Brogan Shrimpton beat S&T goalkeeper
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) to the loose ball and headed it inside the far post to end the game.
The Panthers (1-1-1), who were picked to win the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title this year, jumped on top with two goals in the first 10 minutes of action from Matt Whelan, as he scored after a shade over six minutes had elapsed on a rebound and again three minutes later following a through ball from Brayden Texer.
S&T (0-2) got on the scoreboard in the 23
rd minute when
Joe Mueller (Cottleville, MO/Francis Howell Central HS) sent a pass to Parks, who put a shot past DU goalkeeper Eric Riley for his first goal of the afternoon to cut the Panther lead in half.
Davenport held a 17-12 advantage in shots in the game; Parks had three shots to lead S&T. Posey had six saves in goal for the Miners.
Missouri S&T will open its home schedule Sunday as it hosts Upper Iowa at 2 p.m. at the S&T Soccer Field.
