Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T women's volleyball team picked up a key win in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play this afternoon (Sept. 22) as the Miners turned in an all-around solid team performance to hand the Indianapolis Greyhounds a 3-0 loss (25-20, 25-18, 25-22) at S&T's Gibson Arena.
The Miners, who are now 2-2 in home matches this season, improve to 10-5 this fall and are at 3-3 in the conference with the win.
S&T received a match-leading 15 kills from junior outside hitter
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston), who also registered a match-best .375 hitting percentage with just three errors in 32 opportunities. Senior outside hitter
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) had nine kills and hit .269 for the contest while senior middle hitter
Carson Talley (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) totaled seven kills to go with a .294 attack efficiency rating. Indianapolis, which is presently 10-5 overall and 5-2 in the GLVC, was paced by Katie Furlong's 14 kills.
For the match, the Miners hit .260 overall with 39 kills and just 12 errors in 104 attempts. S&T also posted 45 digs, six block assists, and had four service aces.
Directing the S&T offense was redshirt sophomore setter
Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood), who accumulated a match-most 35 assists. Defensively, junior defensive specialist-libero
Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) garnered a match-best 15 digs. In blocking, junior middle hitter
Caroline Dykes (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) totaled three block assists as both squads chalked up three total team blocks apiece.
Set 1: S&T 25 – UINDY 20
S&T prevailed in the opening set as the hosts registered a 20-14 lead following
Emilee Schlader's (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) kill. The Greyhounds pulled to within three points at 21-18 but wouldn't get any closer as the Miners tallied the next two points to take a 23-18 lead. The teams then exchanged a point before S&T won set point on an UIndy ball-handling error. The Miners turned in a .263 attack percentage for the set while the Greyhounds generated a .114 hitting proficiency.
Set 2: S&T 25 – UINDY 18
The Miners went ahead 2-0 in the match as a result of winning set two. S&T, which compiled a .211 hitting percentage, went out in front 8-5 to begin the set before the Greyhounds raced back to get within 11-10. However, the Miners countered by reeling off four unanswered points to make it 15-10 and then maintained a six-point advantage at 20-14 after a kill from
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic). UIndy managed to cut its deficit to four points, 21-17, only to have S&T score three points in a row to up its advantage to 24-17 and a kill by S&T's
Carson Talley (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) kill would follow to end the set.
Set 3: S&T 25 – UINDY 22
The third and final set was a well played one as both teams produced their best hitting performances of the match as the Miners posted a .321 percentage (12-3-28) and the Greyhounds hit at a .200 clip (11-5-30). The set was also a contested one as there were 16 tie scores and seven lead changes. A 12-all deadlock represented the last tie in the set as S&T scored the next two points to take the lead for good.
