PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Missouri S&T's women's golf team picked up its first-ever tournament victory Monday, finishing one shot ahead of William Jewell to capture the Palm Springs Tournament at Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort.
Not only did the Lady Miners win the team title, they also had the individual medalist in the
Taylor Ornelas (Whittier, Calif./La Serna), who shot a 152 while playing in her home state. Ornelas duplicated her Sunday score of 76 on Monday to become the first player in program history to earn medalist honors.
Over the course of the two days, Ornelas recorded 24 pars – the most of any player in the tournament – and also had three birdies while shooting one under par on the par-five holes on the course.
The Lady Miners, who finished with a team score of 644 to beat out William Jewell, had three other finishers among the top 10 in
Anna Reisinger (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg), who was seventh with a score of 162;
Karson Kimsey (Sautee Nacoochee, Ga./White County), who finished ninth at 164; and
Tylor Whitley (Raleigh, N.C./Garner), who score of 166 was good for 10
th.
Katie Hamilton (Republic, Mo./Republic) finished in 13
th place with a score of 169, one spot ahead of
Riley McFarlane (McKinney, Texas/McKinney North), who recorded a total of 170 in the two-day event.
Missouri S&T's next competition will take place in the last week of March at the Rockhurst Invitational, which will be contested at Crestview Country Club in Wichita, Kan., beginning on March 26.
