ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Missouri S&T had a heart-breaking end to its opening weekend of play, as Henderson State pushed a run across in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie and come away with a 1-0 win at the Ronnie Hawkins Tournament.
Alexis Morton's successful squeeze bunt scored Bethany Allen with one out in the eighth to win the game for the Reddies (2-1), as the Lady Miners finished their first weekend of play with a 2-3 record.
S&T managed only three hits in Sunday's game – a second inning single by
Ashley Davis (Erie, Ill./Erie), a hit in the sixth off the bat of pitcher
Avery English (Carterville, Ill./Carterville) and a one-out single by
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) in the seventh --- but couldn't score off those opportunities.
The Lady Miners' best scoring chance came in the eighth when the international tie-breaker came into effect, but they were unable to bring home
Marcy McCalla (Staunton, Ill./Staunton), the runner placed on second at the start of the frame.
English allowed only three hits in 7 1/3 innings, with two walks and five strikeouts as she bounced back from a rough outing on Saturday.  Each team had only three hits in the contest.
Missouri S&T will return to action in its home opener, slated for Tuesday, Feb. 13 against Lincoln at the S&T Softball Field.  The doubleheader with the Blue Tigers will begin at noon.
