ROLLA, Mo. – A cold shooting day for Missouri S&T's men's basketball team, particularly in the second half, sent the Miners to defeat Saturday afternoon as it suffered a 64-44 Great Lakes Valley Conference loss to Lewis at Billy Key Court.
The Miners shot just 27.5 percent on the afternoon and made only five-of-24 from three-point range as they fell to 2-22 overall and 0-16 in the GLVC. After making only 32 percent of their shots in the first half – but trailed by only six at the intermission – S&T connected on just 23.1 percent of their tries in the second half.
S&T held a three-point lead at 12-9 after a basket by
Allante Pickens (Chicago, IL/Curie) eight minutes into the contest, but the Flyers (14-13, 9-8 GLVC) went on a 10-0 run to take a lead it would never relinquish. The Miners were within four in the final moments of the opening half after
Chris Harris (Antioch, IL/Lake Forest Academy) hit two free throws, but allowed a basket off an inbounds pass under their own basket just as the period ended to send the Flyers to the locker room with a 36-30 lead.
Romain Louiserre (La Ferte Alais, France/Fredrick Fays) hit a jumper a minute into the second half to cut the Lewis lead to four, but the Miners didn't score again for nearly five minutes as the Flyers rattled off 14 straight points to build an 18-point lead.
Ervin Sarajlic (St. Louis, MO/Oakville)'s three-point basket halted the run, but the Miners still couldn't untracked offensively as they were held to just 14 points over the final 20 minutes.
Sarajlic and
Chris Harris (Antioch, IL/Lake Forest Academy) were the only Miners in double figures with 10 points apiece, while Louiserre pulled down 10 rebounds as the teams were even on the boards at 36.
Lewis got 13 points from Donovan Oliver and 12 from Cristen Wilson.
The Miners will play their final home game of the 2017-18 season Thursday night when they host McKendree at 7:30 p.m.
