S&T Drops 70-67 Overtime Decision To Wayne State

Ashland, Ohio – The Missouri S&T women's basketball team discovered the hard way a game isn't over until the final buzzer sounds as the Miners let a lead slip away en route to suffering a disappointing 70-67 overtime loss to Wayne State (Mich.) this Sunday (Nov. 25) afternoon in second-round play of the Ashland (Ohio) Thanksgiving Tournament at AU's Kates Gymnasium.
 
The Miners, who held a 40-29 lead at the half, were outscored by the Warriors 35-24 in the second half to send the game into overtime.  Wayne State posted a 23-13 points advantage in the fourth quarter and proceeded to outscore Missouri S&T 6-3 in the five-minute overtime frame.
 
For S&T, freshman center Alex Kerr's14 points led four players in double-digit scoring.  Junior forward Maddie Raley and sophomore guard Marta Durk each tallied 12 points while junior center Mykala Baylor contributed 10 points.  Baylor along with junior forward Ashley Harvey paced the Miners in rebounding with nine boards apiece. 

Guard Nastassja Chambers' game-high 20 points was tops among three individuals with double-figure totals for Wayne State, which with the win improves to 2-3 on the season. Guard Ja'Nae Williams totaled 18 points with nine rebounds and guard Alex Matus garnered 14 points as the Warriors would go 24-for-73 shooting from the field (32.9 percent).  WSU was successful on seven-of-23 (30.4 percent) in three points and had a 62.5 percent success rate (15-24) at the charity stripe.
 
Missouri S&T, which drops to 2-3 overall this season, finished the game shooting 47.2 percent (25-53) from the floor, 44.4 percent (8-18) from three-point territory, and was 9-of-11 at the free throw line for 81.8 percent.  Wayne State forced the Miners into 29 turnovers, which played a key part in its comeback, while the Warriors committed 16 of their own. 
 
The Miners would take a 28-10 points advantage in bench scoring while the Warriors claimed the upper hand in both second-chance points (16-5) and points off turnovers (26-15). 
 
After 1st Q – S&T 20, WSU 9
S&T jumped out to a 9-3 lead three minutes into the game, but Wayne State went on a 6-2 scoring run to get within 11-9 at the 3:13 mark.  The Miners countered by scoring nine consecutive points to close out the first quarter.
 
After 2nd Q – S&T 40, WSU 29
The Warriors fought back in the initial three minutes to draw within 24-23 before S&T tallied 10 straight points to go up by 11 points, 34-23, on a Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) three-pointer with 4:50 remaining in the quarter.  The remaining time saw the Miners post their largest lead of the opening half at 11 points on two more occasions, which included with one second left after an Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) layup. 
 
After 3rd Q – S&T 51, WSU 41
The Miners' double-figure lead evaporated at the 5:45 mark as the Warriors proceeded to narrow their deficit down to five (44-39) with 2:25 remaining on the clock.  But, S&T was able to get its lead back up to double digits as the Miners scored seven straight points to lead by 12 at 51-39 on Mykala Baylor's (South Bend, Ind./Clay) basket with 33 seconds left in the third quarter. 
 
After 4th Q – S&T 64, WSU 64
Trailing by 15 points (56-41) with 8:29 left in the regulation, Wayne State outscored the Miners 11-3 over the next two-plus minutes to cut its deficit down to seven (59-52).  WSU would make a final run in the final 3:13 minutes by scoring nine consecutive points to pull into a 63-all tie with 50 seconds left.  WSU's Ja'Nae Williams then made both free throws to give the Warriors their first lead (64-63) of the game and S&T was able to tie the game with 21 seconds remaining on the backend of a two-shot free throw by Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy).  WSU would have the final shot to win it in regulation but Ja'Nae Williams' shot was blocked by Ashley Harvey (Raytown, Mo./Raytown) as the horn sounded.  
 
FINAL SCORE: WSU 70, S&T 67
 
In the five-minute overtime, Wayne State made four straight free throws to increase their lead to 68-64 with two minutes elapsed. A three-point field goal by Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) trimmed WSU's lead to a point (68-67) at the 2:34 mark, but the Miners were unable to get any closer.  Ja'Nae Williams' free throw with 2:17 left put the Warriors up by two (69-67) and then Sam Cherney made a free throw after being fouled on an offensive rebound with 1:58 remaining. 
 
Up Next: Missouri S&T begins Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play Saturday, Dec. 1, versus the Drury Panthers in Springfield, Mo. A 1 p.m. (CT) start is scheduled for the instate matchup at DU's O'Reilly Family Events Center.
