Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T women's volleyball team was able to get back on the winning track this Friday (Oct. 5) night as the Miners overcame an opening-set deficit to register a 3-1 victory over the Saints (16-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-17) in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) action at S&T's Gibson Arena.
The win by S&T snapped a three-matching losing streak as the Miners improve to 11-8 overall and 4-6 in the GLVC with the victory. Maryville lost for the 11th consecutive time as the Saints fall to 4-15 overall and 0-11 in conference match play.
Leading S&T offensively were junior outside hitter
Emilee Schlader and senior outside hitter
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) with a match-high tying 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Freshman right side-middle hitter
Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) along with senior right-side hitter
Ellen Schulz (Wildwood, Mo./Eureka) supported the Miners' attack with seven kills apiece. Schlader notched a double-double for the contest as she contributed 13 digs on the defensive side while junior defensive specialist-libero
Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) dug up a team-most 14 Saints' attacks.
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) also served up a match-most five aces for S&T, which produced a .129 attack percentage for the match and claimed a 48-32 kills advantage.
Directing the S&T offense were redshirt sophomore setter
Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood), who totaled a match-most 24 assists, and sophomore setter
Aubrey Sowers (Coralville, Iowa/Iowa City West), who garnered 17 helpers.
Set 1: Maryville 25 – S&T 16
Maryville led most of the way in the opening set and posted a .300 hitting percentage. S&T knotted the set all up at seven-apiece before the Saints went on a 5-2 scoring spurt to lead 12-9. The Miners cut the deficit to 13-12 on a MU attack error only to have the Saints tally the next four points to take a 17-12 lead. S&T got within four points at 17-13 on a sophomore right-side hitter
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) kill but was unable to get any closer.
Set 2: S&T 25 – Maryville 21
The Miners improved their hitting proficiency in the second set, going from .086 to .250 which resulted in a favorable outcome. A kill by senior middle hitter
Carson Talley (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) pulled S&T into a 20-all tie and represented the first of five unanswered points as the Miners took a 24-20 lead and were at set point. An
Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) kill followed a S&T service miscue to account for the set-clinching point.
Set 3: S&T 25 – Maryville 17
An 8-1 S&T run to commence the third set spelled trouble for the Saints as the Miners led from start to finish. S&T managed to build an eight-point lead at 16-8 and 10-point cushion (23-13) in the late portion of the set as the Miners would end the set by holding the Saints to a -.029 hitting percentage.
Set 4: S&T 25 – Maryville 17
Set four, which consisted of eight tie scores and four lead exchanges, was of the back-and-forth variety. Following a Maryville timeout after the Miners had claimed a 17-14 lead, S&T went up 21-16 as a result of a Saints' attack error. From there, the Miners scored five of the last six points to win the set and the match. Although S&T managed to hit for an .088 efficiency in the set, the Miners limited Maryville to only a -.059 success rate in hitting attempts.
