Volleyball Sweeps Quincy in Season Home Finale

Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T women's volleyball team recorded one of its best performances this season as the Miners gave their three senior student-athletes a decisive 3-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) victory (25-14, 25-21, 25-6) over Quincy this Saturday (Oct. 27) afternoon in what represented the final home match of their collegiate careers in front of 237 spectators at Gibson Arena.

S&T, which honored its trio of senior student-athletes in outside hitter Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic), right-side hitter Ellen Schulz (Wildwood, Mo./Eureka), and middle hitter Carson Talley (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) in a special pre-match ceremony, came out focused from the start of the match and dominated virtually all of the way.

The Miners, who were appearing in their regular season home finale, are now 15-13 overall and 7-9 in the GLVC this season to date following the win.  S&T, which finished home court play this season with a 5-4 mark, concluded the three-set match by hitting for a .379 percentage (43-7-95) while the Miners did a commendable job on the defensive side by holding the Hawks to a .009 attack percentage (27-26-110).

Junior outside hitter Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) turned in a productive day for the Miners as she totaled a match-leading 18 kills and registered a .567 attack percentage with 18 kills in 30 attempts.  Joining her in double-figure kills was Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic), who had 12 kills and generated a .417 hitting percentage.  For Quincy, which falls to 12-17 overall and 2-14 in the GLVC this fall, Sarah Brown's eight kills lead the way.

S&T's two setters, redshirt sophomore Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) and sophomore Aubrey Sowers (Coralville, Iowa/Iowa City West) both cracked the double-digit assists column with 20 and 13 helpers, respectively.  Quincy setter Sara Rathbun garnered a match-leading 23 assists for the Hawks.

Defensively, junior defensive specialist-libero Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) racked up a match-high 17 digs and Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) contributed 10 digs as the Miners claimed a 43-36 digs edge.  Ellen Schulz (Wildwood, Mo./Eureka) led S&T with four block assists and Carson Talley (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) supplied three block assists.  Maria Gonzalez was tops for Quincy with a 10-dig performance.

Set 1: S&T 25 – QU 14
S&T controlled play in the opening set as the Miners led throughout and recorded a match-best .438 hitting percentage (16-2-32).  S&T scored the first five points en route to producing a 9-2 lead.  The Miners would go on to post an 18-10 advantage following a Carson Talley (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) kill and held a 24-13 lead at set point.  A Hawks' attack error resulted in the set's final point.

Set 2: S&T 25 – QU 21
The second set, which consisted of eight ties and four lead changes, featured an 11-all tie thru the initial 22 points scored.  The Miners snapped the tie with five straight to go up 16-11 and led 21-16 a little more than halfway through the set.  Quincy, which hit .070 in the set to S&T's .324 efficiency, was able to narrow its deficit to three points at 23-20 following a Miner bad set.  The two teams exchanged a point apiece before S&T wrapped up the set win on a kill by Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston)

Set 3: S&T 25 – QU 6
A 9-1 start by S&T put the Hawks in a deficit which they weren't able to overcome.  Leading 11-5, the Miners proceeded to score 13 unanswered points to increase its margin to 24-5 and put the host team at set point.  The teams traded a kill apiece with the set-winning one occurring as Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) hammered a Sarah McGinnis (Middleton, Wis./Edgewood) set into the Quincy side of the court.

Up Next: The Miners are on the road next weekend, Nov. 2-3 for their final two regular season matches of the 2018 campaign.  S&T takes on the William Jewell Cardinals Friday, Nov. 2, in a 7 p.m. (CT) tilt at WJC's Mabee Center in LIberty, Mo.  The Miners then conclude the regular season Saturday, Nov. 3, against the Rockhurst Hawks in Kansas City, Mo., with first serve scheduled for 3 p.m. (CT) at RU's Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse.
