SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Eighth-ranked Drury used a pair of first half surges to take control of Saturday's Great Lakes Valley Conference contest with Missouri S&T, as the Lady Panthers handed the Lady Miners an 82-51 loss at the O'Reilly Family Events Center.
Drury (14-1, 5-0 GLVC), who won for the 12
th straight time, used an 18-4 run to close the first quarter to overcome an early S&T (6-8, 1-5 GLVC) advantage and had another before halftime to build a big halftime lead.
The Lady Miners played on even terms with the Lady Panthers in the early minutes of the contest, taking a 9-7 lead following a three-point basket and then a pair of free throws by
Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia). However, Drury ran off 18 of the final 22 points of the first quarter, before pulling away late in the second quarter to take a 24-point lead to the intermission.
S&T trailed by 13 at 32-19 after
Bria Pierce (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley North) made one of two at the line at the 4:39 mark, but again, the Lady Panthers surged late in the quarter as they outscored the Lady Miners 15-4 after the Pierce free throw.
The Lady Miners outscored Drury 19-18 in the third quarter, but Drury extended the final margin in the final period as S&T made just three-of-12 from the field in the final 10 minutes.
Arand led three Lady Miners in double figures with 14 points, while Joe'l Bland and
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) had 10 points apiece. Missouri S&T shot just 35.4 percent from the field, hit only three-of-14 from three-point range and turned the ball over 22 times.
Heather Harman had 22 points for Drury to lead all scorers.
The Lady Miners will be back at home Monday to take on William Jewell at 5:30 p.m. at Billy Key Court.
