Kansas City, Mo. – Despite starting strong in each of the first two sets the Missouri S&T Miners fell in straight sets at Rockhurst on Saturday afternoon in Kansas City, Mo. The Miners had a hard time slowing down the Hawk offense allowing them to hit over 30 percent for the match.
S&T held an 8-6 lead in the opening set but a 7-0 run from Rockhurst (12-4, 4-2 GLVC) turned that lead into a five-point deficit. The Miners (5-10, 1-5 GLVC) were able to cut the deficit to a couple of points but were unable to get over the hump as the Hawks pulled away down the stretch to win 25-20.
S&T got off to another strong start in the second set scoring four of the first five points but Rockhurst used another long run that turned a deficit into a lead. The Miners eventually trailed by as many as eight points in the frame but were able to close the gap to three points multiple times but weren't able to get any closer than that as the Hawks closed out the set by scoring five of the last six points.
The third set belonged to Rockhurst as they built a big lead early and wouldn't look back on its way to completing the sweep. The Hawks led by as many as nine points and had an attack percentage of .400.
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) led S&T with 13 kills while
Ellen Schulz (Wildwood, Mo./Eureka) finished with eight kills.
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) dished out 26 assists and
Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) added 10 digs. The Miners finished the match hitting .168 as a team.
Audrey Arand had a match-high 13 kills while Mary Rolf added nine kills. Grace Carter had a match-high 33 assists while Anne Hellewege added 15 digs.
The Miners are back in action on Tuesday evening taking on Quincy at 7 p.m. at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
