Miners drop pair at Truman to open weekend series

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Missouri S&T's bats were held in check Friday afternoon by Truman State as the Bulldogs swept the first of two Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheaders between the teams, winning by scores of 11-2 and 2-0.

The Miners were held to one run over the first eight innings of game one, then got only four hits in game two against a quartet of Truman pitchers as they were shut out for just the second time this season.

Truman scored in six of the first seven innings of game one, taking the lead in the opening inning on Charlie Kreh's run-scoring single and adding a run in the second on a Wyatt Fones RBI single.  Mason King hit a leadoff homer to open the third and Chris Iliopoulos drove in another run with a hit before the Miners got on the board in the fourth.

Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles) led off the fourth with a double down the line in right, then moved over to third on a one-out fly ball by Matt Reschke (Darien, IL/Hinsdale South) and came home on an opposite field single by Zach Bracken (Berthoud, CO/Berthoud).

However, the Bulldogs broke the game open by scoring four times in the fourth and adding two in the sixth on a home run by Jason Priest and another run in the seventh.

Truman outhit the Miners 16-9 in game one, with Bracken and Eli Miller (Shelbyville, IL/Shelbyville) getting two hits apiece for S&T.  Starting pitcher Trent Green (Perryville, MO/Perryville) took the loss on the mound.

S&T had an early opportunity in game two, as Matt Knickerbocker (Bayfield, CO/Bayfield) reached on a one-out bunt single and Adam Richter (Breese, IL/Mater Dei) followed by drawing a walk, but Truman starter Rian Markes was able to retire the next two hitters to thwart the Miner scoring chance.

The Miners also got leadoff hits in the fourth and fifth innings – getting another hit later in the fifth as they loaded the bases in the inning, but Matt Tometz recorded a pair of strikeouts to escape the threat and keep Truman in the lead.

The Bulldogs got the only run they would end up needing in the third when Nick Agliolo led off with a hit and scored on a one-out double by Kreh.  Truman got its second tally in the sixth on an RBI hit off the bat of Jon Lyons.

Truman had a 9-2 advantage in hits in the nightcap as Anthony Garza (Belleviille, IL/Belleville East) took the loss for the Miners (15-17, 6-8 GLVC), who will wrap up the weekend series with the Bulldogs (12-23, 5-9 GLVC) with a Saturday twinbill beginning at noon.
