Eighth-ranked Knights down Miners

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Missouri S&T fell into an early hole Saturday and was unable to escape from it as eighth-ranked Bellarmine pulled away in the second half for an 80-59 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory.

The Knights went on a 10-0 run after the Miners had tied the score at 12 on a three-pointer by Jalen Myers (Shorewood, IL/Minooka) and held a lead of at least seven for the remainder of the half.   Bellarmine led 35-25 at the intermission as it shot 58 percent in the first 20 minutes to just 33 percent for S&T.

As the second half began, the Miners quickly closed the gap to six when Randy Holmes (St. Louis, MO/Soldan International Studies) made one of two at the line, but Bellarmine moved the lead back to 10.   S&T kept trying to get closer, getting to within seven with just under 16 minutes to play on a free throw by Juwan Miller (Kitchener, Ont./Huron Heights), but that turned out to be the final time S&T could get as close as seven.

S&T hit 11 three-pointers on the afternoon and shot 39.3 percent from long range, but hit only 36.4 percent from the floor overall and was outrebounded by 13 for the game.  The Miners did force the Knights into 14 turnovers.

Holmes and Telloy Simon (Kitchener, Ont./St. Mary's) led the Miners (9-11, 3-10 GLVC) with 11 points apiece, while Ervin Sarajlic (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) finished with nine.

Adam Eberhard led all scorers with 19 points as the Knights (20-3, 12-1 GLVC) had four players in double figures.  Bellarmine shot 57.4 percent for the game.

Missouri S&T returns home for three of its final five regular season games, beginning with Thursday's 7:30 p.m. game against Illinois Springfield at Billy Key Court.
