Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miner softball squad broke open a close game scoring four times in the top of the seventh to take a 6-1 win over the Newman Jets on Saturday morning at the Midwestern State Round Robin in Wichita Falls, Texas.
S&T (1-2) broke on top in the first inning. With one out
Carley Hamann (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way North) singled to right and advanced to second when
Monica Weiss (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette ) tried to score but was thrown out at the plate. With two outs, Hamann advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville) made it 2-0 in the second with a solo home run to right to lead off the inning. The Lady Miners had opportunities to add to their lead in the fourth and fifth innings but left two runners on in each inning.
Newman (2-6) cut the lead in half in the home half of the sixth. With one out Delaney Hiegert walked and then advanced to second on a groundout. Bayley Horsch got the Jets on the board with a single to center scoring Hiegert. Horsch advanced to second on the throw home and represented the tying run but
Kati Viets (Sweet Springs, Mo./Sweet Springs) got Ariole O'Neal to pop up to second to end the inning.
S&T got some clutch hitting in the seventh to break the game open.
Rachel Aiardo (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) and Weiss started the inning off with back-to-back infield singles. A wild pitch moved both runners up to second and third and then
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) drove in Aiardo with a single to center to extend the lead to 3-1. A groundout to second brought in Weiss to make it 4-1.
Jacey Allen (Roanoke, Texas/Byron Nelson) added to the lead with another single scoring Klein to make it 5-1. Allen would eventually score on
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central)'s two out single back up the middle to cap the scoring.
Viets allowed a lead-off single in the home half of the seventh but was able to set down the next three hitters to even her record at 1-1. She tossed a complete game allowing the one run on four hits with a strikeout against two walks.
The Lady Miners finished the game with 10 hits and were led by Weiss and Klein with two hits each.
S&T continues play in the Midwestern State Round Robin later on Saturday afternoon against Colorado School of Mines at 2:30 p.m.
