Balanced attack leads S&T to 80-54 win over Westminster

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's women's basketball team used a balanced attack to snap its five game losing streak with an 80-54 win over Westminster at Billy Key Court on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Miners (5-5) shot 62 percent from the floor in the second half and finished the game with four players in double figures.

S&T was cold to begin the game making only five of 20 shots in the opening quarter but the Blue Jays (5-5) weren't much better shooting only 33 percent from the field. Westminster led by as many as three in the first 10 minutes but the Lady Miners ended the quarter on a 6-2 run to take a 15-14 lead at the quarter break.

The Blue Jays scored four of the first six points to begin the second quarter to regain an 18-17 lead on a layup by Mikalyn Callahan near the halfway point of the quarter. S&T retook the lead for good on a three-pointer from Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) moments later as the Lady Miners went onto outscore Westminster 14-7 over the remainder of the quarter to take a 31-25 lead at halftime.

S&T shot only 32 percent from the field in the opening half but was 5-for-14 from three. Kabetske led the Lady Miners with eight points while Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) added seven.

The Blue Jays shot 32 percent from the floor as well but was 5-of-8 at the charity stripe. Grace Archambault and Payton Beeler combined for 15 of Westminster's 25 points in the first 20 minutes.

S&T was hot in the third quarter shooting 67 percent (12-for-18) from the field as it outscored the Blue Jays 27-18 in the frame. The Lady Miners led 40-34 with 7:13 left in the stanza and then went on a 10-0 run to extend their lead. Bria Pierce (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley North) had four points in the run while Kabetske and Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) added three points apiece.

The lead grew to 58-40 with less than a minute to go in the quarter on a runner from Arand but Westminster got an old fashioned three-point play from Kendahl Adams to cut the margin to 15 at the end of the quarter.

S&T continued its strong play in the final quarter shooting 56 percent from the floor and doubled up the Blue Jays 22-11. The Lady Miners led by as many as 28 points in the stanza after a layup by Joe'l Bland (St. Charles, Mo./Homeschooled) with 1:00 left to play.
