ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T was unable to hang onto a one-goal lead in the second half Friday evening as Maryville rallied to knock off the Miners 2-1 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at the S&T Soccer Field.
The Miners, who lost for just the second time in their last seven contests, took the initial lead in the game in the 14
th minute.
Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/) got a lead pass from
Ian Hansen (Springfield, MO/Kickapoo), took the ball down the left side of the field and sent a cross to
David Murphy (Naperville, IL/Naperville Central), who buried a shot by Saint goalkeeper Christian Kjaersgaard.
S&T was able to hang onto that advantage into the intermission in a tightly contested first half, but Maryville knotted the game up in the 57
th minute when Joergen Pettersen sent a cross that went to JD Sohn on the opposite side of the net and he beat S&T goalie
Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South).
Both sides had opportunities over the next several minutes to break the tie before the Saints were able to do so in the 72
nd minute. Nathan Schilly sent a cross from the deep right corner to the middle of the box, where Vittorio Sasso scored to give Maryville the 2-1 lead.
The Miners had one shot on goal after Maryville's go-ahead tally, but Kjaersgaard turned away that attempt by
Trey Haman (St. Louis, MO/St. Louis University HS) in the 81
st minute. S&T had three other attempts that were off the mark as well as three corner kick opportunites.
Maryville (9-2-2, 7-2-2 GLVC), who received votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches Division II poll, outshot S&T 18-16 in the game. Hohenstein was credited with eight saves for the Miners (6-5-1, 5-5 GLVC), who host Missouri-St. Louis Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Sunday's game will also be Senior Day at Missouri S&T.
