Miners' winning streak ends at hands of sixth-ranked Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Missouri S&T's offensive attack was stifled all afternoon by sixth-ranked Rockhurst and the Hawks got a pair of second half goals to take a 2-0 decision Sunday in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

The loss ended the Miners' winning streak at four and dropped S&T to 5-4-1 overall and 4-4 in conference play, while the Hawks won for the eighth consecutive time and remained undefeated in the GLVC at 7-0.

The first half was scoreless with only one shot on goal over the first 45 minutes, which came from Rockhurst's Salim Gumati in the 34th minute that was turned away by S&T goalkeeper Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South).  The Hawks had six shots overall to S&T's one in the first half.

However, just over a minute into the second half, Kaleb Jackson was hauled down in the box leading to a penalty kick that Adam Michel converted to put the Hawks into the lead.

Hohenstein stopped a direct free kick by Jackson from just outside the box about six minutes later, then the Miners dodged a bullet on a corner kick moments later when Jackson headed the ball just wide of the net.  In the 67th minute, Hohenstein again stopped Jackson on a shot close to the net.

Rockhurst got its second goal in the 85th minute when Michael Panarisi headed in a pass from Umoh Ufot.

The Miners had a couple of scoring chances late in the contest, but an attempt by Martin Klevjer (Trondheim, Norway/) was high and one by Bryce Johnson (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt South) was stopped after a deflection.

Rockhurst outshot the Miners 23-4 in the contest; the Miner shots came from Klevjer, Johnson, David Murphy (Naperville, IL/Naperville Central) and Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik).

The Miners return home for their next three games, beginning with Friday's 7:30 p.m. clash with Drury at the S&T Soccer Field.
