Rensselaer, Ind. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners made a spirited second half rally but ran out of time in a 67-60 loss at Saint Joseph's on Saturday afternoon in Rensselaer, Ind. The Lady Miners (6-9, 1-6 GLVC) couldn't overcome a slow start trailing by 12 after the first quarter before outscoring the Pumas (7-9, 3-3 GLVC) by five over the final three quarters.
Brittany Morris started the game on fire for Saint Joseph's scoring the first seven points of the contest before
Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) got S&T on the board with a 10-foot jumper. The Pumas continued their hot shooting early scoring the next 10 points to build a 15-point lead thanks to a couple of three's from Lauren Ruth.
Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) cut the margin to 12 hitting a three-pointer from the right corner with 0:23 left in the frame to make it a 12-point contest at the quarter break.
The Lady Miners were just 2-of-12 shooting in the first 10 minutes while Saint Joseph's was 6-for-19 but Morris and Ruth accounted for 13 of those points.
S&T cut the lead to 10 early in the second quarter as Greenwood was fouled on a layup and had a chance at a three-point play but missed the free throw.
Katey Brown (Craig, Neb./Guardian Angels Central Catholic) got the rebound but the Lady Miners missed a couple of chances to cut into the Puma lead. The Pumas took advantage with a 16-6 run over the next four minutes to build their largest lead of the game at 33-13 on a three-pointer by Hannah Albrecht.
S&T wouldn't go away ending the half scoring seven of the last 10 points to trim the lead to 36-20 at the halftime break.
The Lady Miners shot 46 percent in the second quarter to up its shooting percentage to 32 percent by the break. Greenwood led S&T with seven points while Arand added six points.
Saint Joseph's shot 42 percent from the floor in the first half and went 6-of-11 from the three-point line. Ruth led all scorers with 13 points while Albrecht added nine and Morris had seven.
The Lady Miners opened the third quarter on a 9-2 over the first five minutes to cut the Puma halftime lead to 38-29 but seven straight points from Saint Joseph's pushed the lead back to 16 with 2:02 left. S&T was able to score six of the final eight points of the quarter to cut the lead to 12 at the end of the quarter.
The Lady Miners scored seven of the first 10 points to start the fourth quarter cutting the Puma lead to 50-42 with 7:48 to play. Kalea Parks, the leading scorer for Saint Joseph's, then took over scoring the next four points as the two sides began trading buckets. The Pumas extended their lead to 60-46 after another bucket from Parks with 4:11 to play.
S&T continued to chip away at the lead getting it to nine after a free throw by Greenwood with 2:12 to play. Parks made 1-of-2 at the foul line to extend the lead back to 10 but Arand answered on the other end with an old-fashioned three-point play with 1:02 left to make it 62-55.
Morris made four straight free throws to extend the lead back to double digits with 0:23 left.
Raetchel Gray (Allen, Okla./Byng ) hit a tough three-pointer from the right corner making it an eight-point game with 0:15 left and then after a turnover, Gray hit a shot in the lane to make it 66-60. The Lady Miners were forced to foul and fouled Parks with 2.1 seconds and she hit 1-of-2 to ice the game.
After its slow start, S&T heated up over the final three quarters and ended up outshooting the Pumas for the game. They finished the game shooting 44 percent (24-for-55) from the floor but went 3-of-10 from three and just 9-for-14 at the foul line. Greenwood led four Lady Miners in double figures with 14 points. She was joined in double figures by Arand with 13, Gray added 12 and
Sandra Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) had 10.
Saint Joseph's ended the game shooting 40 percent from the floor, was 8-for-17 from three and 13-of-19 at the foul line. Ruth led the Pumas with 16 points while Albrecht had 15, Morris added 13 and Parks finished with 11. SJC outrebounded S&T 37-34 and had a 21-13 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Lady Miners return home on Thursday when they take on Rockhurst in a 5:30 p.m. contest at Billy Key Court.
