Portland, Ore. – The Missouri S&T volleyball squad dropped its final two matches at the Concordia-Portland Labor Day Tournament on Saturday. The Miners fell in the opener to Metro State (Colo.) in four sets before being swept by the hosts Concordia-Portland to close out the tournament.
The Miners (0-4) recorded 43 kills in the contest against the Roadrunners (3-0) but except for one set had a tough time containing the MSUD attack as it finished with 56 kills. S&T outhit the Roadrunners .185-to.164 but Metro State had three players reach double figure kill totals compared to one for the Miners.
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) led S&T with 14 kills while
Caroline Dykes (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) added seven.
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) dished out 15 assists and
Corinne Stulce (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) had 19 digs.
Michaela Smith had a match high 16 kills while Vasati Fiatoa and Ryan Hoerdemann finished with 13 and 11 kills respectively. Brandi Torr dished out 44 assists while Jackie Lopez finished with a match high 23 digs.
In the finale against the Crusaders, the Miners struggled to get into a rhythm offensively finishing the match with a hitting percentage of .100. They finished the match registering 31 kills but committed 20 errors in 110 swings.
Concordia's defense was able to frustrate the S&T attack as they had eight total blocks and dug up 49 balls while hitting .200 as a team.
Combs was the lone Miner in double figures with 11 kills. White had 21 assists and Stulce finished with a match high 17 digs.
Tori Johnson led all players with her 12 kills and was one of two Crusaders to finish with double figure kill totals. Michele Brown had 31 assists while Anna Dols had 16 digs.
The Miners return to the court next weekend traveling up to St. Joseph, Mo., to take part in the Gold and Green Challenge. S&T will take on Oklahoma Baptist at 2 p.m. next Friday followed by a 6 p.m. match with the host Missouri Western Griffons.
