ROLLA, Mo. – Scoring early and often, Missouri S&T made quick work of Bacone Saturday night in its season opener as it routed the Warriors
62-14 at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
The Miners scored on all six of their offensive possessions in the first half and also got a defensive score to build a 49-6 lead by the intermission, then scored two more times in the second half – without punting once in the contest – as they posted their highest point total in a season opener in school history.
The defensive score provided S&T with its first points of the evening, as on Bacone's third play from scrimmage,
Nate Brown (Webb City, MO/Webb City) picked off a pass and took it 25 yards for a touchdown. When the Miner offensive finally got onto the field, it blew through the Warrior defense in four plays to extend the lead on a one-yard run by
Charles Bournes (Chicago, IL/Morgan Park).
Before the opening quarter ended, the Miners got a touchdown run from
D'Luis West (Troup, TX/Troup) and a five-yard scoring pass from
Tyler Swart (Dickinson, TX/Dickinson) to
Spencer Elrod (Lancaster, CA/Eastside), then added three more touchdowns in the second quarter on a pair of short scoring runs by
Deshawn Jones (Olympia Fields, IL/Rich Central) sandwiched around a 40-yard touchdown pass from Swart to
Dalton Major (Bourbonnais, IL/Bishop McNamara).
Bacone got its only points in the first half prior to Major's touchdown on an 11-yard scamper by quarterback Trey Seward.
S&T added scores in the second half on Swart's third touchdown pass of the night, a 29-yard toss to
Jacque Harris (Jacksonville, FL/Stanton) and a two-yard run by
Chris Kennard (Plano, TX/Parish Episcopal) in the fourth quarter.
The Miners racked up 356 yards of total offense – on a night when they started six of their nine offensive possessions in Bacone territory – which included 218 on the ground.
Lamar Wilkes (Maryland Heights, MO/Pattonville) had 55 yards to lead S&T in that department and combined with Swart to complete nine-of-14 passes for 138 yards. Eight different receivers had catches for the Miners.
Defensively, S&T held the Warriors to 182 yards, recorded three sacks and forced two turnovers in the contest, the second being an interception by
John McClure (Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit) on the final play of the first half.
Landon Compton (Lamar, MO/Lamar) led the way with seven tackles.
Missouri S&T returns to action next Saturday when it faces West Florida in the Argonauts' first-ever home game in Pensacola, Fla.; kickoff is at 6 p.m. West Florida won the program's first game Saturday with a 45-0 win at Ave Maria.
