S&T downs Battlers to remain alive in NCAA Midwest Regional

QUINCY, Ill. – Missouri S&T came alive in the middle innings to back the pitching of Dan Borek (Greenville, Wis./Hortonville) to advance in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Friday, as it defeated Alderson Broaddus 9-1 in an elimination game to advance to the next round on Saturday.

After three scoreless innings, the Miners (36-18) took the lead with two runs in the fourth and scored three times in the fifth and sixth innings, while Borek threw seven shutout innings to send S&T to a game at 3 p.m. Saturday against Grand Valley State.

The Miners missed a scoring chance in the second against ABU's Tyler Stage – this year's "Pitcher of the Year" in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference – when a rundown situation led to an inning-ending double play.  But when another opportunity presented itself two innings later, S&T cashed in on that chance.

Following a leadoff walk to Eli Miller (Shelbyville, Ill./Shelbyville) – one of seven leadoff hitters to reach base for the Miners in the game – and a stolen base, Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) singled into center to score Miller with the first run of the game.  On the next pitch, Collin Zurweller (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) hit a ball that stayed fair down the right field line for a double that brought home Karbowski.

In the fifth, Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) reached on a bunt single to open the inning and after stealing second and taking third on Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei)'s ground ball, came in to score on an opposite field single by Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman).

Bodenstab would then proceed to steal second and scored on Miller's two-out triple – which was the 76th hit of the year for the junior left fielder to break Will Morrison's single season record for hits in a season.

Miller would score moments later when Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) reached on an infield single to make it 5-0.

Zurweller opened the sixth with a hit and later scored when Portwood hit into a fielder's choice.  The Miners would add two more runs in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Bodenstab and an RBI single by Miller.

In the meantime, Borek retired the first 10 Battler hitters and pitched out of a pair of jams in the middle innings, getting a strikeout of Chuck Hooker with the bases loaded to end the fourth and getting a big defensive play to escape the sixth as Richter crashed into the retaining wall to haul in a foul pop by Trent Shaw.

Borek allowed six hits and struck out seven in his seven shutout innings to improve to 9-4 on the season.

The Battlers (31-21), who were shut out by regional host Quincy in their opening game Thursday, got on the scoreboard in the eighth when Shaw reached on an infield hit with two outs to score Cody Cowart, but the Miners added a run in the ninth off three walks and a fielder's choice.

The Miners outhit the Battlers 15-8 as all nine starters in the S&T lineup had at least one hit.  Zurweller had three of S&T's hits, becoming the first player in Miner history to record a three-hit game in an NCAA Tournament contest.
