Miners, Hawks conclude wild weekend with another split

QUINCY, Ill. – An offensive-minded series between Missouri S&T and Quincy ended Sunday with a doubleheader split for the second day in succession, as the Miners took the first game at QU Stadium 14-6 and the Hawks salvaged a split of the four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference set with a 15-4 win in the nightcap.

The two teams combined for 83 runs in the four games as the winning team scored at least 11 runs in each contest. The 83 runs between the two teams is the fourth-largest total in GLVC history in a four-game season series.

The winner in each game on Sunday was propelled by a big first inning.

Missouri S&T jumped on Quincy starter Braden Shull right from the outset in game one, putting five runs on the board before its own starter, Aaron Bedsworth (New Bloomfield, Mo./New Bloomfield), took the mound.  Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) to open the inning, followed by a walk to Justus Nelson (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) and a two-run double with one out by Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney).

With two outs, Collin Zurweller (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) drew a walk, then Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union) tripled between the outfielders in left center to bring home both runners.  S&T then scored its fifth run of the inning when Matt Reschke (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) reached on an error.

The Miners scored again in the second when Eli Miller (Shelbyville, Ill./Shelbyville) singled home Bodenstab to chase Shull, then tacked on two more runs in the fifth and sixth and scored xx in the seventh after the Hawks broke up the shutout in the sixth.

In the fifth, Ulrich hit his second home run in as many days with a man on to make it 8-0, then Miller drove in two in the sixth with an RBI single to give the Miners a 10-run advantage.

Quincy had just one hit through the first five innings against Bedsworth before it got on the scoreboard in the sixth, as David Jacob hit a two-run homer for the Hawks' first runs of the contest.  Ryan Snyder homered later in the inning for Quincy's third run, but S&T put a four-spot on the board in the seventh.

The Miners got an RBI double from Tyler Schutt (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) to open their scoring in the seventh, while also getting an RBI single from Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, Mo./Lutheran-St. Charles) and two more unearned tallies on an error on a muffed throw.  Quincy scored a trio of unearned runs in the seventh.

S&T got three hits from Miller and two apiece from Bodenstab, Ulrich and Johnson as it outhit the Hawks 13-7.

Bedsworth went the distance to record his fifth win of the season, striking out six on a windy afternoon.

In the second game, it was the Hawks who got off to the fast start, tallying four in the first inning off S&T starter Ryan Bearden (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood).  Snyder drove in two with a two-out single, which was followed by a two-run homer off the bat of Matt Hilmes.

S&T got a run back in the third when Matt Reschke (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) hit a leadoff homer, but the Hawks answered in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Snyder and busted the game open an inning later when they scored eight times.

Reschke hit his second homer of the game in the seventh, a two-run shot to the opposite field and the Miners (18-9, 5-3 GLVC) also scored in the ninth on Miller's RBI double.

Quincy (18-7, 4-4 GLVC) outhit the Miners 19-8 in the nightcap, with Reschke getting three of the Miners' eight hits.

Missouri S&T returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Missouri Southern in a non-conference single game at 2 p.m. at the S&T Ballpark.
