LEBANON, Ill. – After winning eight straight games to start the 2016 season, Missouri S&T went on the road for the first time Saturday and dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at McKendree by scores of
7-4 and
5-1.
Missouri S&T was done in by big innings in both contests, as the Bearcats had a trio of innings during the afternoon where they scored at least three runs.
The Bearcats had the first of those innings in the opening frame the game one, getting the runs home on an RBI single by Keith Rogers, an error that allowed a run to score and a ground ball off the bat of Tyson Boehne that brought home the third run.
S&T scored single runs in the second when
Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) reached on an error and scored on a triple by
Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, Mo./Lutheran-St. Charles) and in the third when
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) scored on
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central)'s sacrifice fly after he reached on an error with one out.
However, the Bearcats responded in the bottom of the third with a four-run outburst; Chris Deaville's two-run single off
Dan Borek (Greenville, Wis./Hortonville) and Luke Johnson's RBI single put McKendree up by four, then a run-scoring hit by Colton Calhoun accounted for the fourth run of the frame.
Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union) homered to lead off the sixth for the Miners and S&T also got a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Bodenstab to get to within three, but the Miners left runners on base in each of the final three innings as the comeback stalled.
The Miners were outhit 15-8 in the opener; Johnson,
Eli Miller (Shelbyville, Ill./Shelbyville)and
Cameron Burk (Nacogdoches, Texas/Cushing) all had two hits apiece for S&T. Borek took the loss on the hill.
In the nightcap, the Miners got on the board in the opening inning when Karbowski doubled with two outs and scored on
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney)'s single, but the Bearcats tied it an inning later when a fielding error led to an unearned run with two outs.
The contest remained tied until the bottom of the fifth, when the Bearcats put three runs on the board against S&T starter
Aaron Bedsworth (New Bloomfield, Mo./New Bloomfield). McKendree strung together three straight hits to open the fifth, taking the lead on Issac Fisher's RBI single.
A squeeze bunt by Adam Kunkel scored the second run of the inning, then the Bearcats scored again later in the inning on a hit by Luke Johnson. McKendree (2-7) added an unearned tally in the seventh for the final margin.
The Miners had six hits to McKendree's eight in game two, with the hits coming from six different hitters.
The Miners and Bearcats will wrap up their weekend set with a single game Sunday at noon.
