Miners split twinbill, take weekend series from Drury

ROLLA, Mo. - Missouri S&T took the four-game weekend series to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play over Drury, winning the first game of Saturday's doubleheader 4-2 for its third win in the series. Drury captured the finale with a 4-0 victory in the nightcap.

The Miners grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the opening inning of game one, as Justus Nelson (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) walked with one out and following a fielder's choice, Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) doubled down the line in right to score Eli Miller (Shelbyville, Ill./Shelbyville). Collin Zurweller (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) followed with an opposite field single to drive home Ulrich.

After the Panthers tied the score with two in the fourth off S&T starter Aaron Bedsworth (New Bloomfield, Mo./New Bloomfield), the Miners regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Cameron Burk (Nacogdoches, Texas/Cushing) singled with two outs to bring home Zurweller. An inning later, Nelson scored on a passed ball to extend S&T's lead to 4-2.

Once the Miners got their two-run advantage back, Bedsworth retired the final six Panthers in order to close out the contest. The senior lefthander scattered seven hits and struck out six to improve his record to 4-2.

Miller and Zurweller had two hits apiece for the Miners in the opener.

Drury starter Austin Simms shut down the Miners in the second game, holding the Miners to five hits over eight innings as the Miners were blanked for the first time this season.

S&T had a couple of early chances against Simms, but hit into double plays in each of the first two innings.

The Panthers (9-16, 1-3 GLVC) broke on top in the fifth on a two-run homer by Ryan Kayhill, then added two more in the eighth .

Ryan Bearden (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) allowed just six hits in seven innings for the Miners and had four strikeouts. Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) had two of the Miners' five hits as the Panthers outhit S&T 8-5.

The Miners return to action next Saturday when they open a four-game series at Quincy.
